Ball box on GC IV

I know it's probably obvious, like keeping the balls from falling on the floor, but what is the reason for the cross beam in the ball box of a GC IV? My table has gullies, but what a painful experience it is everytime you forget it's there, and reach in to grab some balls to rack. WHACK!!! slammed my finger again, and I'm not the only one in my house that wants that awful thing removed. What are the consequences of removing the cross beam, and is there a work-around??

Thanks

Your exactly right. Its to keep the balls from jumping out of the box. its supposed to help slow down the balls and settle them out. It was not on earlier fours. I never thought it was a huge problem on the tables without
but evidently somebody did.
