Ball quality & playability

For the past year & a half, I've been using the used balls that came w/ my used table. They play fine & have some scratches, but no nicks or chips. I believe they are phenolic. Just for kicks, last night we played w/ a set of Cyclop Ladons I bought off eBay a few months ago. My wife & I both played noticeably better and I had far more action on the cue ball than w/ my usual set of balls. I know the quality of a set of balls can affect the durability, but can a ball affect playability too (if both sets are in good condition)?

Sounds like the other set wasn't phenolic. Could have been polyester resin balls. They are not as lively as the real deal.

Cleanliness of the balls makes a HUGE difference in the way balls play and react. It changes the game for sure. The reason I bring this up is because a “good” set of balls will stay clean longer and hold the natural polish of the balls. I have a set of centennials, Arimith tournaments and a recent purchase of Predator Acros II balls made by Arimith for Predator. The Acros outplay them all and stay clean far longer than the previous mentioned. I highly recommend them.

Yes a properly made and cleaned set of balls will make the game better, and will react better and truer.

Why buy a set of new balls a few months ago and not use them? Seems a bit silly to keep them around for decoration or to keep the door propped open. Or are they like the good china and you are saving them for guests LOL?

Sort of. I got such a good deal I had to buy them, then tried to save wear & tear on the good ones. I think they're out for good now, though.

and good balls save table cloth. bad quality balls burn cloth fast. good smooth surface will create less heat and save money and play better. So always use best balls to save table and money spent to cloths. And also good quality balls wont get worn out. If treated properly they last 10+ years.

You are getting a double whammy right now. The balls made out of better resin will play better, always. Clean polished balls will play better than neglected balls too. Those nice fresh out of the box balls play great but without cleaning and polishing will not play that good after fifty or a hundred hours on them. All it takes is cleaning and polishing to restore almost all of that new ball play though.

never thought of this but thats probably what happened to my table i feel.

Just remember that polished pool balls have less cling so the throw imparted is a lot less too.
The pool balls look prettier but substituting soap & water and denatured alcohol works just fine.
