Ball sizing

I have a ball polisher that I have been using for 10 years on 2 sets of balls. (Centenials and Arimiths )The #s on the centennials seem to be a little
higher. Is that normal? Time to change I guess. I have a go no go gauge ( 2.25”) to measure wear, at what diameter reduction should I change balls?

What do you use for polish? Balls shouldn't be any smaller in 10yrs time, at least not in home setting. Poolhall cb's and 1b's sometimes get a tiny bit smaller.

The real question is what are you using to measure the ball diameters ?

I have micrometers which I use in machining which read to 0.000,1". These are plenty accurate to measure the diminishing diameters of pool balls. They are also accurate enough to measure the difference in diameters of brand new pool balls. My Duramith set measured 0.002,7 different largest to smallest.

Over the last ten years, have you gotten any better?

The ones I've measured in pool halls are usually at least 1/16" smaller - that's almost 10% less volume.
That seems like a lot. I measured a few '97-'97 vintage Centennials that weren't near that far off.
I've just eyeballed the difference with the CB between two OBs and a straight edge across the top - but I don't think my estimate was far off. Maybe I need a better class of pool hall, though...

It doesn't take much difference in a sphere's diameter to make a significant difference in its volume/weight.

I used to play where they put the balls through the polisher every night. They also got a lot of play over 15 years or so, like waiting lists many nights.

The LO was very proud of his brand new measles cue ball until I pointed out how large it was compared to the object balls and how hard it was to draw it. It was maybe a couple of millimeters larger, which is 5/64ths unless I dropped a decimal.

Here is a previous discussion of a very, very easy way to measure the difference in sizes if you can eyeball one gap: https://forums.azbilliards.com/threads/smaller-than-regulation-pool-balls.493350/page-2#post-6391613

The LO? He never brought his new cue ball in again. Me? I brought my own set in.
