band saw question

We have:

18in Jet with couple of different blades

12in sears craft man, very small just for point, and billets.

Good luck.

Height

Nice- looking bandsaw John. I read about building a wooden platform filled with sand to raise those European-styled bandsaws up to a comfortable working height.
Enjoy!

It actually isn't bad now. With that said it will be better once I build the base to make it mobile.

Dave,
Most of the taiwan knock-offs are about the same. I have one with a metal cutting blade and it does OK. I also have an old delta that I use with a 3/4 inch wood blade. These machines do OK in my opinion, but you will get some blade wander and they are underpowered. Most have 1/2 horse motors. With some stronger springs to tighten the blades to a higher tension and some better guide blocks, they can still do a good job. Just like any other power tool in the shop they take time to tweak, with the low cost, they take more time to tweak. All that being said, I wish I had the Jet mentioned above. That is a great bandsaw with plenty of power.

The best thing you can do is put on roller guides and compensate for blade drift, even when cutting point stock.

after much homework this appears to be the saw for me...

1.5 hp at 110v

i believe 2hp at 220v

(most 14's are 3/4 or 1 hp)

max 3/4 blade

great fence for a 14''

now what blade???

That looks like a good saw for the money. Large motor, already has roller guides, looks like a pretty good fence and the cam action blade release is the nuts on a band saw. This last item is what keeps a band saw running good and true for a good length of time. Few people remember to release the spring pressure on their wheels which, in time, causes a set in the tires, stretches the band and weakens the frame.

The best blades that I have found are Timberwolf Blades. They are made of Swedish steel and cut very true and last longer than others without breaking as they don't need as much spring pressure to run true. I get mine here:

You can read their tutorials and learn an awful lot about band saw blades and and their usage.

I HAD ALONG TALK WITH A GUY TODAY AND HE WAS TELLING ME AMPS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THEN HP. HE SAID HP IS A RELATIVE TERM AND REALLY ISNT TRUE TO ALL MACHINES. WHYEN EASURING HP EVERY MAKER IS DIFFERENT. THE TRUE TEST IS TO LOOK FOR HIGHER AMPS. IS THERE ANY TRUTH TO THIS.

MY CHOICE SEEMS TO BE GOOD. I WENT BACK THRU AND LOOKED AT ALL THE SAWS AGAIN AND 1.5HP @ 15a STILL SEEMS LIKE THE BEST SAW FOR THE $$$

This is pretty much dead on. That's why I made the answer I did in post #14. What ones calls 1/2 HP another may call 1/10. The calculation for true HP in electric motors is Volt X Amps X efficiency / .746 according to Google.

How do you define the size?

I got this from my Wife for Christmas, it's has been good to me so far, but I
have not made any veneer yet. What size do you call this then:

Edit: Hit the specification button on the left menu to see the numbers..

I guess it might be a 14" ?

A lot of good info here in respect of blades :thumbup2: I would for sure test some
different blades when the time comes.

Sorry Dave, for some reason it seems like the link don't work.
I Googled the saw - a Record BS350S and here are some links which I hope work :

I have no idea how this compares to some in you're end in size and the like,
but it has some nice features I like. Heavy and large table and the rip fence
is so much better than the Metabo 317 Precision I looked at in the beginning
(which is a lot smaller than mine) :

Anyway, happy hunting
