Bank Pool Rules Questions

So here are a couple of things that have came up recently in bank pool that I thought were interesting.

1. How many balls have to hit the rail on a legal break for full rack bank? I hear two balls + the cueball is this accurate.

2. During a game I touched a ball (not the cue) is that a foul?

3. During a game I touched a ball jawed in the hole and it fell in, is this a foul and what do we do in this case as it drastically affected the outcome of the game?

4. I'll have to diagram this. Playing full rack bank the guy I was playing called the ball one rail into pocket A. it caught the point of the pocket on the way down because he missed it by a mile and then it went straight in somehow.... Is this considered a two rail bank or a one rail bank and is it a legal shot?

It does not appear that these rules are defined, but after asking some locals they say its an okay shot in this case as long as it hits the rail AFTER the side pocket....seems a bit like a house rule and that would be tough to measure in a real game especially if it was shot fast.

Most of your rules are explicitly answered in Steve Booth's proposal for bank pool rules (which have come together with a lot of input from the real players).


So, full rack, 2 object balls to a cushion.

Cue ball fouls only.... object ball is replaced by ref. or by opposing player.

Hitting the point way up the table makes the shot no good if he called a straight back bank. Only contacting adjacent cushions on approach or adjacent point are forgiven. (Please, no misunderstanding on my wording)

And, yes, you can play a single bank shot off the point. No rule prevents that, but you better call it.

So also, I know this is not an official rule, but I know it is played in the derby city bank ring game.

On a three rail or more kick...for balls usually hanging in the hole what constitutes a three railer?

For example.

Basically makes the cueball skip the rail a bunch of times

I didn't know if there was a ruling on this as well, but nonetheless I imagine its not a legal shot. Perhaps you aren't allowed to hit the same rail more than once in a row? Either way if someone could clarify that informal rule it would also be helpful.

Official Bank Pool is all "ball first" -- no rail first shots are allowed. They may allow that locally here and there (ask first!), but at the Derby it's only for the ring games -- to keep them moving and keep the crowd interested.

Fred, on the long rails, I would consider both before and after the side pocket to be all the same rail, so hitting the point on either side of the pocket would still only be the equivalent of sliding down any rail into the pocket -- in my interpretation. (Why else would they call them "long" rails? :) )

I think that's really stretching the rules, but that's just me. Is this an open item for clarification that your forum members should answer, or does everyone else who actually plays banks agree with your interpretation?

So after talking with some local players atleast in this area as long as the ball contacts the long rail PAST the side pocket on a table length straight back it counts.

I am pretty certain that Steve is correct.. I play a lot of banks and although the situation you mention rarely happens where the OB would hit the opposite side of the side pocket on the long rail, it would have the same outcome of the shot counting. I can't say that it has ever happened to me but who knows??
