Well we have the Battles in Bangkok underway and they have nothing to do with the recent coup and martial law though I would impress on those overseas that now is a very safe time to come to Bangkok. With the army in charge the politically motivated killings of the last six months are now behind us and the streets are once again secure and Thailand back to business as usual. Just don’t express a political opinion.
No these Battles are on the pool table and are a result of the arrival of Shane Van Boening, Cory Duel (‘I’m just along for the ride’ he says) and the English pro Darren Appleton in town along with Canadian pro Jason Klatt. SVB and DA are hosted by Hustler’s pool hall managed by English pro Stuart Pettman who convinced them to spend a week or so in Bangkok between the China Open in Shanghai and the World Ten Ball championship in Doha starting June 16th. SVB and DA are scheduled for the main event match at the end of the week but there are nightly events and pots to be won at Hustlers with a round of challengers in the interim.
One strong challenger who has been making money on the scene in Bangkok the past three months is rising Pilipino pro, CoCoy VillaFuerte (it seems there’s a never ending supply of rising pros in the Philippines.) In a spontaneous opening match for the week CoCoy beat Corey 11 to 6 on Monday night with no handicap. There is sure to be a rematch and a lot of action to follow. It’s a great time for lovers of the pool game in Bangkok. As an American I love to see our top pros traveling and taking on the world. Maybe this will help us win the Mosconi cup down the road.
