Beloit, WI - The Carom Room - $1000 Added - Nov 6th - "Open" - 10-Ball

I have a rules/strategy question that was asked on RSB. Why would you call a safety?

The rules are kind of strange and I don't see any advantage of actually calling a safety.

4.6 Safety Play

1. On any shot after the break (and push-out, if one occurs), you may
declare a safety. You must declare the safety to your opponent before
the shot, and they must acknowledge your intentions.

2. On a safety, your inning ends after the shot unless you pocket a
ball. If you pocket any ball on a safety, your opponent may require
you to continue shooting (see Rule 4.8).

3. If you do not declare a safety or it is not acknowledged, and you
pocket an obvious ball, your inning continues and you must shoot
again. A safety must meet the requirements of a legal shot or it is a
foul. (AR p. 67)

4.7 Illegally Pocketed Balls

1. A ball is illegally pocketed if it is:
a. pocketed on a safety, including the lowest numbered ball;
b. pocketed in other than the called pocket;
c. pocketed on a shot in which the called ball is not legally
pocketed;
2. If the 10-ball is illegally pocketed it is spotted. All other
illegally pocketed balls remain pocketed.

4.8 Opponent's Option

If you illegally pocket any ball, your opponent has the option to:
a. accept the table in position, or;
b. require you to shoot again.

Regarding safety play... I find it to be more of a formality. It is a call shot game much like 8-ball. Your "intent" should be made known to your opponent or is clearly obvious.

I do get the underlying process and understand the question in that respect. I just have a feeling this rule is just being consistent and encourages the declare/acknowledge relationship on every shot of a call shot game.

Personally, I have been in many 8-ball games where when at the table my opponent has jumped out of their chair to look at my shot. Once I called safety, they tend to sit back down and behave.

Hey Duane, do you have anything set up with any local hotels? If not wich one is closest/best?

The Carom Room currently does not have anything set up with area hotels. However, there are several choices nearby :cool:

Beloit Inn - within 3 blocks, nicest, newer, pricey

Going southeast on IL side:

Knights Inn - about 5 min on Hwy 75, budget friendly motel, remodeled
Best Western - just past the Knights, very nice, chain prices

Going northeast on hwy 81/43:

Farfield Inn
Holiday Inn
Comfort Inn
Econo Lodge
Rodeway Inn
Super 8

Dont know much personally about them but they are clustered in an area all together and still only 5 mins or so from the Carom Room

Thanks Duane! With that many choices, I'll just wait and see if we're around Sunday....:smile:

How many people are currently signed up? I might swing by to watch the action, but if spots are open day-of I may be inclined to come in earlier.

I think that this may mean that you can call safety before pocketing an obvious shot and your turn ends. In 8-ball, this is sometimes a very good strategic move as you then force your opponent to shoot and either break up a cluster or give you ball in hand to allow for a higher percentage runout if you are in a position where you do not feel that you have a high percentage runout going. I could be wrong here. But, I know in 8-ball I have used this to my advantage on several occasions. Most people will not even think to use it.

Patrick, with the new 10-ball rules your opponent then has the option to pass the shot back to you :eek: Calling safe and pocketing a ball counts as an illegally pocketed ball!

For the "open" events we generally do not take advance registrations. We do have a limit of 96 but the closest we have been is 88. Therefore, if you want to battle with some of the best in the midwest you are more than welcome ;)

The "no master" tourneys are another story. The 96 fills before the day of the event. We do publish those pre-paid lists.

Three foul?!

John, I would bet 90% of the Bbox players outside of Chicago Wouldnt even know what that would mean :) they don't use it there...

Hey Joe, I know they don't use it on the 9 ball. But due to this being their 1st 10 ball tournament and the rule's being posted, I thought it would be good for the players to know.

I understand. And agree. Unfortunately they won't be using it.

Actually not using 3-foul was posted on the first page of this thread in post #3.

It's an antiquated rule. The Carom Room used to use this just like everyone else back in the 80's & into the mid-90's. With "express" type rules and ball-in-hand being used it just doesn't make sense anymore.

So if I give you bih 3 or 4 times playing a short rotation game you can't figure out a way to win :eek: Maybe you should consider playing in handicapped tourneys...

I checked the 3rd post and see that you had said it. I guess I should have looked a little closer.
Good explanation Duane, thanks..................
