Beloit, WI - Upcoming Tournament Season - 2010/2011

The addition of 10-ball was a great idea! Not that I can even run out in 9-ball, but still. lol.

Are you guys going to allow the use of the Magic Racks?

We have nice Diamond racks at the Carom Room. Honestly, I'm not familiar with the Magic Rack. Let me know more and I can get you an answer shortly.

How can I put this? The Magic Rack is the nuts! It was used at the US Bar Table Championships and the recent Mezz 10-Ball Classic in California. It was also used by some at the BCAPL Nationals. I have some and we've been using it here in Oshkosh since I got it. EVERY rack is perfectly tight! It actually speeds up tournaments because you don't have people racking for 5 minutes at a crack trying to get them tight. It also causes less arguements if you're playing rack for each other (even though that doesn't matter for your tournaments). It really is the best thing out there for a rack right now and I doubt anything better will appear. Also, since the racks are perfectly tight (and when I say perfectly tight I mean EVERY single ball is touching! No gaps anywhere!) the 9-ball and 10-ball don't move unless they are kicked so it takes out the luck of 9 and 10 ball breaks. Below is a link to the Mezz site as they sell them and it tells some more of the features. Also is a link to a youtube video of it being used.

Magic Rack.... interesting... although I am only slightly concerned about balls crossing and landing on the rack.

I'll bring it up to the committee and get an answer back quickly.

That's always the first thing people ask about. There have probably been 300 games played with it at the Varsity Club already and I would say 5 times a ball has stopped on it. It's as think as the spot on the table so you just shoot the ball off of it when you get to it. That or if both players agree you can just life the ball, remove the rack, and place the ball back down.

And for those who don't know, the state of WI is going smoke free (like all the surrounding states) as of July 5th.

No more smoking in the pool room however a deck is being built on the south side of the building for those who still need to indulge.

Duane,
Thanks for the list. I'm sure I'll be there for all the NM.
Have a nice summer, see you in a few months.
John

Magic Rack

After further review by the committee we will do two things in regards to use of the Magic Rack. At the beginning of the calcutta during the first two events (one open, one no master) we will ask for input from the players. Assuming no major issues arise from this we will allow use of the rack if "both players agree to its use during the entire match".

So, yes, if you have one & like it then feel free to bring it along for the tourney. If your opponent is good with it (just like "rack your own") then you can use the Magic Rack.

Duane,

On the flyer it calls out BCAPL rules, my question is: Are you still allowing phenolic tipped break cues like last year?

Thanks,
Eric

That sounds like a good idea.

A little suggestion...
What they did in Vegas during the BCAPL was if one player had it, they had to let the other player use it if they wanted. The other player didn't have to, they could just use the normal rack, but it had to be an option. So if I have it I can use it and if my opponent wants to use it, they can, but if they don't want to, they don't have to but I still can. Hopefully that makes sense.

I think this is the right move.

I THINK at BCAPL/Vegas, the rule was a player who uses it must make it available to his or her opponent. This is a weaker requirement than requiring the opponent must agree to use it as well. This is what we will at our July 23-25 tournament at the link below.

Those racks are the nuts, and for whatever reason, balls rolling over it or landing on it is just no big deal.

I like your series of tournaments by the way. I hope people support them in a big way.

Rules

Good point, Eric! The general rule set is BCAPL however we do use a couple of local rules as well.

The phenolic tip for breaking is an equipment issue and Dave Coles has yet to notice any issues with his equipment as a result of phenolic tips on the break. So, yes, phenolic tips for breaking will be allowed!

During discussions we felt that both players should be using the same equipment throughout a match (table, balls, cloth, rack, lighting). If it works as good as you (and everyone else) claim then it should be a non-issue and may become standard equipment as some point.

I totally understand. I honestly don't know why anyone would have a problem with using it unless they want to set/work/mess with the rack to help them make balls.
