I don't know about "best in the world", that would be sort of hard to pin down. In my opinion, though...one of the best would be a fellow by the name of Paul Turner....at least the last time I saw him play, which was a few years ago. At that time you would be hard-pressed to find anyone that could beat him.

I can't think of his full name...it's Keith something?!?! :D :D

Imo

IMO - It Is STILL David Matlock OR Buddy Hall.
I've never seen Keith play on a BarBox, so I can't give an opinion on him.

Paul Turner could get weight. Cliff Joiner would have to be up close to the top.

Could be....I haven't seen Cliff play nearly as much as I've seen Paul play. But, it's been a while since I've seen either of them play. I think CLiff is still around playing, but I'm not sure what happened to Paul. I haven't seen him at all in a couple of years.

I would also have to say David Matlock. I have been around pool for almost 20 yeras & have never heard of anyone playing him even (or otherwise). If someone has, please tell me about it. I don't think a money ball spot would matter. When David is on, and I think if the money was right he would be, no one comes close. Several years back they had a $1000 man tournament during a big Olathe tournament with 7 other champions involved. Race to 15. No one got past 6 on Matlock except in the finals when David Gomez got to 10 or 11. Matlock also won the main even with over 200 something players. The others making my list, in no specific order, would be Jose Parica, Larry Nevel, Jesse Bowman, John Schmidt & Marco Marquez.

I heard nobody could beat Keith on a barbox in his heyday....so that makes Keith the greatest barbox player of all time, IMO.

This is true about Keith and something that I think he and Jesse have in common. I have seen Jesse walk up to a table that he has been left a hard or next to impossible shot ... boom, boom, boom fire em in, then to pull off some incredible finale.

His pool playing can be orchestrated like a fine instrument. He plays with incredible ease and nothing seems to bother him. I saw him play against Marco Marques some 3 years ago at Windy City. The crowd was up all night watching this high stakes match. Marco seemed to be sweating it and was down a lot. Jesse would go up to the table fire em in, and incinerate the table. He went on to get an hour of sleep (if that) and go undefeated with a 256 player turnout, to win the entire event. His payouts totaled over $8,000 for the weekend.. Not bad for a 19 yr old kid at the time!

And Yes Pat, Chad Vilmont is a part of the boys from Moline. He is another great player and did well at Music City this past week.

Mexican Joe & One Eyed Tony

Mexican Joe was a very good player & hustler way back when. He made a lot of $ traveling with a good player named Toby. They were a great team back in the earlier 70's. Joe played mostly One Pocket & Toby, 9 Ball. Joe did many things (to make money) well. I ran into him & them quite a few times. Made some good scores just rail betting in the right way.

One-Eyed Tony was (at one time) considered THE BEST Bar Table Player in the world. Played out of Oklahoma, - Enid, I think. Very nice man and a gentleman to play. We lost him way too soon to a tragic auto accident. Buddy's first major score on his first road trip (with me) was with Tony at Gringo's Lounge in Tulsa. Still, one of the best bar table matches I've ever seen.

I don't know if this is the same Joe but Joe Salazar (aka) Tracy Joe was a jam up bar box player 30 + years ago. I watched Keith woof for hours at him to get up to play some at the old Hard Times in Costa Mesa. Keith gave him the 8 or 8 and the snap on the bar box, I think it was the 8, and proceeded to break his heart. If I remember correctly I don't think Joe picked up a cue for a long time after that match. That's when he was really Evil!

Joe Salazar IS NOT THE MEXICAN JOE I SPOKE OF.
Joe Salazar & I go way back & played quite a few times. I'll never forget a Gin game we had at a tourney in Tulsa. We where both just learning to play Gin and we had more fun than anything. Joe Salazar is a very nice guy & good player. Saw him not too long ago at a tourney. Still playes great.

One-Eyed Tony was from Corbin, KY, but was always on the road. We lost Tony about a year before Clyde Childress died, also in an auto accident. Clyde was from Berea, about 30+ miles north of Corbin. Man, could those two play pool.

MIKE - Your right, now I remember.
Great Clyde Childress story - A local Short Stop here in St. Louis (Roger) always wanted to go on the road with me because he had heard a lot of good things. Finally, we took a trip. On only about the third play, we were in Lexington and I played Clyde. WE WENT STONE BUSTED.
This guy Roger thought the world was ending. He went on and on about how he must be the un-luckiest guy in the world to go on the road with me and lose. I mean, I had to hear this all the way back to St. Louis. Even I started to believe it, so I dropped him off at home, got some more cash out of the bank and went back out without Roger. The irony is that when I got back to Lexington & Clyde heard I was there; he called and asked me to come to Berea. He put me on a HUGE score in London, KY (with a car dealer) and I made 5 times more than I lost to Clyde. I GUESS ROGER KNEW WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT.
SEEYA SUNDAY, TOM

I believe Cliff Joyner won both the nine ball and eight ball division of a major bar box tourney in Reno last year; that's pretty strong to win both.

While I believe this type of argument about who is the best, much like the Rocky Marciano/Ali boxing debate are a waste of time, I would not bet against Jesse in a winner breaks nineball session on a barbox. 20 ahead payday...
