Best Cataract Surgery Lenses for Pool

I have astigmatism and need cataract surgery. I am nearsighted (-5 or -6). What are the best lens implants for pool players?

What does your surgeon say? I explained pool & focusing distances prior to surgery. Alas, I was disappointed with the results. As it was explained to me..my cameras are good, but because of macular degeneration, the film's bad.. I went with the basic lens, but don't think multi focal would have made a difference.

In January I had 2 lenses replaced and Lasik.

My right eye healed in about 20 days, my left eye in 50 days.

I can now see 20/15 in right eye and 20/25 in left eye. I no longer need to wear glasses to play well at the pool table, or drive, or use the computer. I only need glasses for close up work (less than 2 feet). {But for some reason or another, all the medicine they prescribe to eye surgery patients is written in print too small for them/us to read. !?! }

Lasik will correct all the astig (and coma and trefoil) you have. The new lenses will correct all the spherical you have.

Is there a specific brand of lens that works best? Who would you recommend in Austin, TX?

get what works for living conditions for you. or you will regret the rest of the day you arent shooting pool.

you only get one shot at it and if you choose stupid you have to live with it.

you likely will be fine after the surgery. if not special glasses for a certain distance.

I had my cataract surgery over 3 years ago. The option of prescription lenses versus just the standard version
was discussed and I didn’t want to spend the additional money so I just went with a non-prescription lenses.

Boy, the difference is amazing and I can see vivid colors and details previously not possible. I had three pairs of
eyeglasses…..reading, distance (driving) and billiards ( custom prescription) …….that I haven’t worn since my
surgery. The standard lens works great for me and I do not require any reading glasses unless the lighting in the
area is poor and then I have to focus closely otherwise with better lighting there’s nary any issues at all for me.

Shouldn't you be asking an eye surgeon rather than some dudes on a pool site? When I needed by knees replaced I didn't ask total strangers what their opinions were. That's what you pay guys that do this for a living to decide.

My cataracts started getting worse so I needed some corrective surgery. Three weeks ago I got a Toric lense to fix my astigmatism and distance vision in my left eye. Insurance didn’t cover the Toric lense so the total cost was $2500. A week ago I got my right eye lense replaced for distance. I can see the pool balls well but still need readers but at a lower correction. Insurance paid for all but $450.

Do some reading, ask lots of questions. These are the choices, Mono focal, Mono vision, Multi vision. Add more decisions if you need to fix an astigmatism.

Seriously... research who the best Cateract surgeon is in your area and make an appointment for evaluation. Do that first or do again after you take anyones advice from here. Do it right the first time.

Good advice Frank, that’s what I did after hours of research just to get an idea of what I might be in for.

Partially correct. Eye surgeons didn't spend time in pool halls. There are many smart folks on this forum with the experience to advise.

LIGHT ADJUSTABLE LENSES (LAL)

I lived with cataracts for several years, and above all things, was concerned how the surgery would affect my ability to see on a pool table. Both near and far on a table. And I wanted a surgery such that I would need no corrective lenses afterward, for the rest of my life. Not even readers. I am an engineer by training, anal by experience, and followed eye research that was moving to market.

Well, it came. Light Adjustable Lenses (LAL)’s. I was a very early recipient of the new surgery. The surgery had only come to 12-14 cities. One of the most amazing outcomes of my adult life. I wore glasses for 65 years, have bad astigmatism, wore contact lenses for over 50 years. I have never, in my life, been able to see as well as now. And will never need glasses, readers, contacts, anything corrective for the rest of my life. LAL surgery 100% cures astigmatism. My eyesight at distance is 20-12.5, and close up is better than 20-20 as well.

I could launch into how the new lenses work, polymers, etc., but would rather suggest you start by simply a Google search of Light Adjustable Lenses, check if the expertise has come to your area, make your own decision.

In summary, one of the more amazing things to happen to me in my lifetime. At least, you should check into this.

Agreed.

For years my optometrist would fit me with contacts just for pool.

If you're in that boat you just have to explain you want to optimize your vision for 2-10’ or so and get a guy willing to experiment a bit. They all have full racks of sample lenses and my guy would narrow it down and give me two sets to let me see which would work best for my pool game.

Then my cataracts got too bad for contacts. I went to a *really* good surgeon and told him the range I wanted to see best at and he recommended the Eyhance lens. Its only been available for a couple of years now and it’s particularly good for medium and distance. This lense isn’t covered under a lot of insurance plans and I ended up paying over $2k an eyeball. But it was totally worth it and I now see just a bit under 20/20 in both eyes.

Of course YMMV and I have readers scattered all over the house. The one thing I would stress is researching your doctor. Lately, Gail (who used the same doc) and I have had several friends get cataract surgery and not a one of them are having the same quality outcome we did. The day I walked home from the first surgery I could see clear as could be through the little plastic eye shield I had to wear for a few days. Our friends are not seeing so great days after their surgery and we’re convinced it’s the expertise of the doctor that’s the difference.

I assume one eye is adjusted for distance and one eye is adjusted for distance?

from my quick search it seems the docs can change the shape of this lens AFTER IMPLANTATION AND HEALING.
in order to give you the correct shaped lens for your eyes instead of correction with glasses

Yes, the doctor adjusts them until satisfied with the correction, then it gets permanently set. However they are not continuously adjustable to see both near and far like normal eyes.

Thanks for the info. I bookmarked this in Eye Wiki. I'm almost 70 but still in the early stages for cataracts. Hopefully, it will be even more refined by the time I need it.
