Best Cloth Color

I recently recovered my worn cloth with a wine colored cloth. It's not the same anymore. Lighting and contrast between object balls has lost something. I just don't enjoying practicing as long. Has anyone else made this same mistake. Additional lighting hasn't helped. It just seems that the shooting and the contrast and the shadows are really subdued. I know it's not me. I practiced on a friends Diamond today, has that new blue cloth, but never got tired of playing. I thought the cloth was maybe a tad to bright, but certainly a big improvement over my wine colored cloth. Any suggestions on the best color cloth to recover it with, it has to be changed. I even had my glasses checked, and all is alright. Thanks in advance.

I've never liked the dark colors, but then again, I don't play. Bob says that they are hard on the eyes.

There is a new blue color that Simonis came out with recently that is really nice and easy on the eyes> I will be using that color when we change next time.

Years ago a lot of rooms used different color cloth on different tables. My favorite was a gray cloth, I loved playing on it.

Standard green is the way to go. If you must have a different color, tan is easiest on the eyes. Stay away from any shade of red.

I prefer blue

This place I play has a light blue Simonis and I think I see the edge of the ball better. I think it has something to do with more reflection and less shadows. I could be wrong but I like it.

The best color is the one you are familiar with. Don't change to anything that you have not tried yourself before. Tastes are different as well as ways to see things in different contrasts.

That sounds excellent!
My photography professor turned me on to the superior effect of the gray background. He was a true oldskool ballbreaker, but he new what he was talking about. Ever since, I have been all about the neutral gray (i.e. 18%) background, and not just for photos. I use it everywhere I can think of. I can't wait to paint my living room neutral gray. It will be totally relaxing and everything hanging on the walls will stand out just right, not too much or too little. Therein lies the beauty of neutral gray: it's easy on the eyes, and it yields a level of brightness and contrast that makes almost anything stand out without sticking out.

The purist in me has always taken it for granted that my future pool table would have green cloth, but I think I just changed my mind about that. Neutral gray is just too perfect for the job!

Simonis produces a cloth color called tournament blue, which is said to give the most visibility of all the balls. Other than that I like the Sand/Camel colors, they really look nice once installed.

Traditional green.

I have always been partial to the traditional green myself, however a funny thing happened this past year. Breakers, owned by cuemaker Paul Mottey, had "European" blue Simonis installed on their Diamond tables. Upon experiencing the cloth I was highly impressed. This soft blue was provided terrific contrast for the balls. I really love this blue. I like it much more than the tan cloth that some places use and even a touch more than the green.

Note: For ideal contrast, gray is probably the best since it is color-neutral.

I have traditional green on my table, but I have found I play better on the electric blue...seem to see the edge of the balls better and my best pool was played on this cloth. Next recovering I am going blue I think. I don't like the camel color, just too different than the norm.

I have the standard Simonis green....not bad, been playing on it for a bajillion years. I really like the Camel colors though. I played on it at a tournament and felt it was easy on the eyes. You also never "lost" a ball on that color.

Red to Green

I origianally had a red cloth on my table (origianal Cloth) and it wasn't too bad of a color, but was extremely thick and did compliment the room decor better. When I re-felted, I put on Simonis green and there is no question on the improved playability.

I wonder if they started to come up with colors for people who like pool tables as 'decoration' or to 'make a statement'. How many times do you see a pool table on tv (television shows, not ESPN) and the color is something different than green or blue? More important to be able to match the room than be able to provide perfect playability.

Only my 2 cents, but Green or blue is my choice. AND green ended up matching the room in the end anyway.

The room on my old college campus must have got a deal one day, I walked in and EVERY table had a DIFFERENT color. I thought a box of Lucky Charms exploded. Some weren't too bad, but some were repulsive, especially some really dark colors. Navy blue and BLACK. :(

I haven't been back to campus to see what ever happened there. But if I remember, the level of play didn't ever warrent any 'good' cloth.

Simonis electric blue is great.
That is what I am having put on this weekend actually. Set it up with my table mechanic yesterday. :D

I hate playing on dark toned cloth, no matter what color. Now well into my 50's, I want as much separation as possible to see the ball's edge. Therefore, tan and gray are the easiest to play on. Green is fine, too, if the lighting is adequate. The worst is a dark colored table with lights that don't cover the entire surface, where the center of the table is lit and the ends are dark.

Traditional Green is my favorite but I like Tan and Electric Blue too.

Me too.

One thing I consider when making this kind of decision is what kind of table I will be playing on at local pool halls and tournaments. That's why I have traditional green on my home table and will continue to do so.

That blue and especially tan is real nice to play on though.
