What is the best drill for a beginning adult player? By best I mean one that emphasizes the basics while not being interesting enough to keep an adults interest. Thanks in advance for you input.

10-down has always been a fun drill for me.

Take ten balls; line them up starting at the center of the foot rail, along the symmetrical long axis of the table. Line them up with enough spacing so that they are very close, but have enough room to be pocketed into the corners individually. The balls near the foot spot will need more spacing than the rest. Basically a string of balls at one end of the table.

Starting with ball in hand, try to pocket all ten in any order. Your run ends if the cue ball touches any other balls in the process. Each ball is 1 point. You get 10 tries. Try to score 100.

Teaches you basic cue ball control.
Nobody is too good for this drill. Go for 1000 if you can.

each player has their own fundamental flaws in their stroke/approach/etc. If you don't fix the fundamentals before the faults are thoroughly ingrained, you'll regret it when you have to fix them later. I'd suggest having someone with a good grasp of teaching pool to give you a couple of hours of their time to go over what you should work on before you start putting in hours of worse than worthless work on your game.

Bosch make a nice 36v drill, but it keeps adults interest.
