Best hitting Pin?

i have nothing to base my opinion on other than the fact it is what i have always had in my cues. 5/16 18 into a brass insert. when i had dick neighbors make my cue it's the pin i asked him to put in. it's not his standard but it's what i asked for. almost every cue i've ever owned had one so it's what i stuck with. i have owned and shot with a joss that had a 5/16 14 piloted (i think) and i just didn't like the cue. i think that had more to do with the balance and weight of the cue, but when it came time for a custom i figured i would get the pin i had used the most.
i don't think there is any real difference in any measureable way. and for the casual player, i think they'd be hard pressed to hit six cues and tell you if they had different pins.

Pin's oh Pins...

I've got a bunch of different cues with different pins...

3/8 - 10 (FF) Mcdermott, Dieckman
3/8 -10 G10 (FF) BCM
3/8 - 11 (FF) Krick
5/16 - 14 (piloted) Joss, Mcdermott
5/16 - 18 (FF) Meucci's
Uniloc Radial (FF) Dominiak
Uniloc Radial (FF) Dominiak - This one is different the pin is slightly pulled above the face

They all hit different... but honestly, I don't know that you can attribute it to the pin. I will say the 2 piloted cues seem to be different compared to the Flat Faced ones, and the G10 (which I purchased 2 weeks ago or so) is different, but that might be the balance more than the pin.

I've made a conscious effort to try different materials and designs to see if there is a difference.

If you gave me a blind test, I could probably pick out the 5/16 - 14 piloted just from the way the cues act in drawing the ball, but honestly... I think the other factors (weight, balance, tip, ferrule) play a much bigger role than pin style.

Just IMHO.

Piloted 5/16-14. Joint ivory sleave over stainless steel or just plain ivory.

I'm not good with pin sizes or anything, but the radial joint that goes in Poison jump cues is awesome, and I have one of those in my old 15.5oz playing cue. I just wish there was a universal pin so that if you wanted to try out different shafts you can without needing to get them changed...

I don't see that happening anytime soon...each maker picks the pin(s) that they feel provides the best performance in their cue. Try telling Southwest that they now need to change from their 3/8-11 pin to something else...I think they might just balk.

Now, on the flip side...there are folks that swear by these, because it doesn't matter if you have multiple cues with different pins:
