Best local Tourney set for me... "4-pack"

Yeah, I'm braggin' cuz, it's never happened to me before.

Local $10 tourney, races to 4, oddly handicapped, I end up giving the last 4 to almost everyone, but he's also making them call the money balls.

Anyway, back to my hero story...

I lose the toss, my opponent broke dry, and I ran out.

I broke and ran out.

Broke and ran to a 6-9 combo (see diagram)

broke and ran out.

Yeah, I know, the haters will say I didn't put up a four, but, to me, from a dry break, 34 balls in rotation is a 4.

First time it's ever happened in a competition, and first time I have ever "run a set". Yeah, I know, it was a SHORT set, but it still felt pretty cool.

This is the situation that came up in the third rack. I had run out, B&R one and was starting to taste that next one. How do I get out??

I thought I came up with a pretty good solution, one that had never occured to me before...

Pocket the 4, make the 5 off of the 7 (moving it from the pocket), and leave yourself with a nice lil 6 - 9 combo.

Whether it is a 4 pack or not - NICE SHOOTING. I pitched shut outs in a couple of my matches in Friday's weekly tourney....feels good when a plan comes together  BTW, mine were alternate break too, so, I had a bit of luck on my side as well (them breaking dry, or not totally locking up a safe, etc.). Again, good shooting, and hopefully the little confidence boost will carry over til the next time you play!!

Yup, exactly!

I don't know why, but that's the first time I can remember ever intentionally clearing a pocket for a combo. Now I am sure I'll see it everywhere!!

I play a lot of barbox 8 ball, so clearing pockets (for combos, or not) is really common for me (I practice caroms constantly). Usually easier to control the cueball this way yhan just running it into the 6, 9, or both....

About 20 years ago, in a "race to 2" eight ball tourney, I won the toss and B&R 2, but this is the only other time I've done it in my first inning if it was more than one game.

As far as carry over, it's funny, I practice mostly on S860 covered GC's up front and just walk up cold for the flip. This was my first set, and the shot after her break was the first ball I'd hit that day on the 8'ers covered in Army blankets.

Even funnier, I had the whole place quaking, word got around the little field like wild fire, my next match I got DOWN 3-0 and my opponent never shot a ball!!! I was giving up the last four (like frickin always) and running out like rain water, only to hang, an 8, a 6 and a 7 the first three games.

I hung in there, SSSSSSSSSSSSSLOWED down, and won 4-3.

I lost the next set 4-3 the same way, then won one or two playing better and split the finals with a buddy.

It's crazy how you can feel aaaaaaaaaalmost there, and when it clicks into gear, the game is all of the sudden easy.

Then some little thing slips out of whack, and you're hanging balls and getting stomped.

Yeah, I hate combos enough that if the 6 & 9 weren't so close I would've probably played for the short side of the 6 and shot it up table.

I can't recall the exact layouts for the rest of the runs, but remember a couple times having to really execute a shot to get out, and coming to a fatalistic acceptance, and just committing to the shot, live or die.

Nice Shooting!!!

I put a 1 and a half pack on this guy Saturday night. He was pissed :)

Here's one, and I am sure the angles aren't perfect, but in drawing off the 3 I ended up laser straight on the 4, no way to move across to the 6.

Following looked like I would end up long and thin, and draw looked like a death trap, either jarring the ball in the side from that angle, or running into the 9, and being unable to draw off the 6.

I know it's not world beater, but I just tried to "pure" the four down table and stun across.

I WANTED to follow with inside, but the cross side scratch looked too inviting, and I am trying to simplify the shot, esp under critical situations, and as the shot gets harder.

I hit the 6 pretty firm, with just a hint of low right, and popped back out to comfy for the last two balls.

Very nice.

Another option there is to play the 4 in the side with a touch of follow and then bank the 6, then cueball positioning is automatic for the 8. But that all depends on how comfortable you are with that bank, but if you're comfortable with it, this way allows for a much larger margin of error.

Yup, good point. But I have been missing those straight back, 95% banks. Don't know why, they've gone from automatic to won't even try.
