Best way to play these 3 balls?

In your case "accidentally stopped the cue ball and didn't have much angle", then I will shoot 8 at the bottom left corner,
and cue ball will go three rails in order to shoot 9 at the top left corner.
Pool is all about speed control.

???????????

What Pharaoh68 said. Much higher percentage with a little left an the big power stroke on the 7-ball. Playing to bank the 9-ball is always a little iffy at best.

This is what I did: A bank shot never occured to me.
This would be the first thing that comes to mind when you have it...however I would move the CB to shoot the 8 in the lower RH corner aswell and come over to shoot the 9 in the upper RH corner....when you start getting wide angles in the side pocket I found them to be easy to rattle out...so why shoot it there when there are 5 others to choose from in this situation...

For me its draw off the seven...back to the side rail the shot came from and rolling out for the eight in the same corner. The angle left for the 8 would dictate the next shot obviously. If it were straight in I'd back up a foot or so and bank the 9 (which is in prime banking shape from lots of angles)A high percentage shot for me.

Truth be told I shoot lots o' bottom.LOTS.Admittedly too much...but when its working it works pretty well and thats why the above holds true for me.

Also the first thing I would have to consider is how "friendly" that side pocket is...ya know...taken balls that should miss or leaving balls up that barely nick a point. If its a pretty friendly hole the 7 with stop,8 with a tick of push and the nine to the same hole banked would be a very high percentage run for me as well (with lots less shape work to boot).

Lots to consider before starting this run imo. From the shooter's draw control to the side pocket % to the bank out if thats a solid part of the shooters game.
This can be played a lot of different ways, many of em mentioned...which one is the best one will depend on whos holding the cue.

I was thinking the same thing, IF I would screw up the seven THAT badly! :D

Well I guess I should mention that my side pockets are very large. On my table, the side pocket is the way to play it. On a tighter table, I think I would attempt to draw straight back and play the 8 ball in the same pocket as the 7 ball.

With that said, I ended up with an angle that I felt comfortable with by slightly cheating the pocket and putting follow on the cue ball.

Nothing wrong with the way you did it. I’d try for the same original plan as you, which was to pocket the 7 leaving an angle into the side for the 8 ball. Then follow to top rail to shoot the 9 in to the same pocket as the 7. Sometimes plans don’t always work the way we want them to.

Actually, given that same situation, a lot of players should be able play position to pocket the 8 ball in any of the six pockets and still get out.
