Sub par equipment is an advantage to the better player. Perhaps what I mean to say is the better player has more of an advantage than the lesser player may realize. Now I do not disagree that my play is more consistent on a good table, cloth and balls. I also am in no debate about the conditions a player should expect at a pool hall or tournament. I can also say that when I miss a shot I missed the shot and can usually lay little blame on the equipment.
What I am saying is that on sub-par equipment the better more knowledgable player will have the advantage with poor equipment. Now I am reflecting upon a match I had last week. Bar table with slow cloth, worn scratched balls and even no table light. We played 6 racks of pool the first rack went 3 innings the whole match was 7 innings.
The better player is going to have a better feel for the nuances of dealing with the extra throw from scratched balls, how much slide from dirty cloth, and clearly slower cloth is easier to play position on.
In this game I understand the concept of you don't know what you do not know. The less knowledgable player may not even understand the effects of such things. The lesser experienced player may have that knowledge but has not had the experience to test the parameters of these nuances.
