I recently recieved my BHQ, J/B and was very pleased with it for the price I don't feel that you will find better quality out there ... The following are pics and a review of this cue I have had it a good week now ... And while it is only a J/B so far it has served me well...

Ok... This is the cue that I recieved from Brent ... When I first asked Brent to make me a JB he replied back asking if I was willing to wait a year for it ... My reply was yes ... We then started discussing woods and I wanted Birdseye and Wenge ... As you can see in the pics that is what this cue is ...Brent told me he had a computer program that would generate the type of cue we are talking about and would print out a picure of what the finished cue would look like ... The first picture is the computer print out of the cue while in the planning stages before Brent even started the cue ...Brent built the cue and delivered it in less then 6 months ...

The cue itsself is very nice the wood in it is very nice Brent selected some good stock to build this J.B. out of ... The wenge has some very nice lines in it and the birdseye has some pop to it and looks good .. I have recieved some very nice compiments on the appearance of the JB ...

The finish is very nice a very smooth and glossy look .... No runs or streaks well sanded and buffed out ... This cue shines ... When you run your hands over the cue it is very smooth you can feel no lines in it ... The joints are tapered well and again you can feel no change in them as to how they line up with the wood ... All the white in the Cue is Ivorine 4 ... All the ring work matches up nicely ... There are no flaws in this cue ...

The cue wieghs in at 19.25 ozs ...

The tip and shaft is 13.40 mm... I like the width and feel that the wider width only helps the J/B

The tip is a white diamond .. I requested this or the Icebreaker ... I feel the White Diamond is a
exceptional tip for a J/B ... And this was my choice ...

The Jump handle wieghs in at 9.25 ozs ...

The shaft ... The shaft to me is quite nice the thickness of it is right about where I like it ...13.40 or 13.50 is what I favor in a J/B ... This shaft is not going to break anytime soon it is super sturdy and built to last ... I also feel the grade of wood is right up there at the top... Nice straight grain maple nothing cheap here ... This is the kind of maple you do not find in most J/Bs but is saved for the nicer playing cues ... Brent is certainly all about quality ...

The Joints ... The joints on this cue are well made both joints go together well and line up perfect ... It is a easy but very snug fit ... The screw lines up perfect and these is no noise when screwing the cue together ... I have seen guys pull out thier cues and go to screw them together and you hear this loud screeching noise as thier cue goes together or see wood shavings falling out ... This will never happen with one of Brents cues these babies are smooth and quiet going together ... Even one of my fellow players commented on the ease of putting the cue together ... Not that it is suppose to be major project ... But with some cue makers it does become one ... The joints are strong and will hold up forever ... The main joint is extra long in the center of the cue I'm not sure why Brent did this I imagine that perhaps with the Birdseye in the forearm he felt that the longer joint may make the joint area stronger and prevent and damage in the future it is the only thing I can think of ...

The ferrell is Ivorine 4 and provides a nice little pop ... It seems to be very sturdy and I think it will last for the life of the cue ... It looks good and plays well ..Of course we are talking about a JB ... But I do believe it will hold up for the life of the cue ...

The tip ... White Diamond .. I think and have had friends comment that these are the best tips for jumping ... I like them for thier break ... Either way they are a nice tip and what I prefer ... I am wanting to try the Ice breaker tip and will at some point ... I love Tiger products.

Customer Service - Brent is a great guy to deal with ... He is very funny and easy to get along with and a joy to work with ... He goes out of his way to give you what you want and make you happy ...

Pricing - Brent is very reasonable I was blown away by his pricing .. It seems like alot of work for what I paid for this cue ... The quality is far above and beyond what I paid to have him make this cue for me ... I doubt you will find another cue maker out there that will give you the qualtiy of cue for the price I got this one for from Brent ...

Shipping - Brent ships his cues very secure as a matter of fact I was cussing him trying to get this package open ... I'm not sure what cost him more the wood to build the cue or the cost of the tape to package this cue up with ... I don't think I have ever had a package arrive that I had to work so hard to get open ... And you know that is a b!tch when you have something like a new cue that your dieing to see and you can't get the package open...lol... I was scared to death I was going to mess up the cue operating on the packaging to get it open...lol...

Negatives -

There are very few negatives about this cue very few at all...The only one I have is one of preference .... And that would be in the main joint at the center of the cue ... For me the joint is to long and takes away from the beauty of the cue ... I don't like the joints in my cues to be any longer then what Schon puts on thier cues ... I don't know if the standard joint for Brent's cues are normally this long ... But my logic for it is that Brent and I had a conversation about the birdseye wood in the forearm and I was concerned about a birdseye break in this break cue ... I'm thinking that maybe Brent felt the longer joint would give the cue more strength and prevent a break in the birdseye ... Just a guess .. Not sure or maybe it had something to do with him putting the joint on backwards to start with ...lol... I'm not sure and this is not a complaint I love the cue the way it is and was just posting this ...

Things to discuss when ordering a cue from Brent ...

* Size and wieght of course he is pretty good about this and comes pretty close to what you want.

* Pricing make sure you get a price from Brent because when he gives it to you it will blow you away and the quality in the cue for the price will blow you away even more...

* Joints discuss what type of joints you want in the cue and ring work ...do you like long or short joints ?

* No matter what you talk to Brent about I'm sure you will enjoy the conversation and come away laughing Brent is a good guy to talk to and builds a great cue at a great price ...

I have been playing with this JB about a week now ... The cue breaks well and scatters the balls good .. I have played in three tourny's with the JB in the past week ... The first was a 8 ball tourny the JB served me well giving me nice breaks and pocketing balls on the break on the way to winning the tournament ... This was on a bar box ...

The next tourny was on Olhausen 9 footers with simmons 860 felt excellent tables and it was a 9 ball tourny race to 7 ... The JB served me well again breaking well leaving me nice patterns and pocketing balls once again on the way to another tourny win...

Then yesterday in a bar box tourny best 2 out of 3 I placed second using this cue to break with ... It does it's job well and gives me a great break every single time ... I have yet to fail to make at least one ball on the break ... It has a nice stiff hit to it and pops the balls well .. I have not sailed off the table with the cue ball on the break using this cue yet ... I am very saisfied with the cue I have got from BHQ ... It is a very good JB no matter what and for the money you cannot touch anything of this quality on the market ... I don't know how Brent stays in business building this great of a cue at those prices ...

Thank you Brent ... And BHQ cues ... It was a pure pleasure dealing with you ....

I just talked to Brent and he is out of electric and may be out for a couple of days.. So he asked me to tell you thanks for the great review. And me likes long joints ;) ;)

Looks like a great break cue, with good break specs. Sounds like a helluva deal as well.

I'm going to have to get the white diamond tip the next time I'm in the market for a breaker. Heard nothing but good things and have yet to try one out.

The white diamond tip... is it phenolic or leather? It almost looks like it has layers?

Im not forsure what is is made of but I do know its not leather. They are made to look like they are layers but im not sure .They are as hard as phenolic ,are feel that way. They take alittle getting use to for breaking because you can put alot of spin and thcb with them and the cb will jump off the table .Hit center cb and slow your break down some and work your way back up to what you feel is good for you.As for as jumping ,to me you can beat them. jeff

hi bob, as far as the composition of the tip , i guess that's a secret.
it's definitely NOT all leather
i asked joe picone and he pretty much declined to say.

i think you may be seeing the two grooves i cut into the tip,
from that pic, it does kind of look like layers
kevin varney turned me on to that idea.
hope he hasnt patented it
or i'll have to send him a royalty check
try one out if you get a chance
i think they are great tips
joe sells them on ebay or you can contact him directly
i'm bushed right now, i'll dig up the links & info for you tomorrow

.. I don't know how Brent stays in business building this great of a cue at those prices ...

i just got my electric back this afternoon, thank goodness
joe b read this to me the other day
damn gary, he was running out of breath buddy!!!
in your review you forgot to mention my typo error
so, i'll spill the beans
i THOUGHT i had told gary $350 shipped
in one of those racing around like a chicken with my head cut off days, i inadvertantly typed $250 shipped
i swear i didnt even realize it until i told him cue was completed and he said cool, i'll send the balance of a $100.
it honestly didnt dawn on me at the time, lots of other stuff going on, then got to thinking about it later, ,
huh, $100, should be $200 , and that's when i found my error looking back thru emails
i damn sure wasnt gonna push that down his throat for my own mistake

oh well, win some lose some
as long as he's happy with the cue and my longass joint collars  i'm happy
hey gary, next cue is cost + $200 shipping, haha LOL
seriously , i appreciate you taking the time to post this
hope you can come up to cincy with jeff when he picks that lathe up

Hello Brent ... You had me looking around the room to see who you were talking to ...lol... I'm not Gary my name is Butch ...lol... Anyway you never know I may make the trip up with Jeff ... That is still in the future and we will have to see how things go between now and then and what all gets planned ... It would be nice to get up there to meet ya ... It could happen ...

Brent you never said anything about 350.00 I always thought the price was 250.00 all along so this catches me by surprise... Don't know what to make of it are you saying I pulled a fast one on you ? Hmmm.... Guess you got me confussed here ...

I don't know the situation and it is none of my business, but all he said was that you got a great deal because he misquoted the price to begin with. If you run a consumer-centric business like this one, you can't tell someone at the last minute that you misquoted the item and it is actually $100 more than quoted. You have to eat it, which he did. That is the sign of a businessman that makes sure his customers are happy and that they want to come back. I think he just wants everybody to know that the price you got is not what he is selling them for.

my 2 cents

Its not leather, and its not phenolic, but it is layered.

Back when i bought my first one from Joe 4-5 yrs ago he told me they were layered pieces, he just didnt tell me what material he uses.

But they do work great and you can get some major spin with these compared to phenolic.
