Big Apple finals

You KNEW there was no way Ralf would let Niels get away without reracking. I believe he made him do it twice, just to maybe get his blood pressure up. It was beautiful seeing Niels' break and run under those circumstances.

If I understand correctly, the loser was racking balls for the winner/breaker? Why does it have to be like that? Couldn't they have 'rack your own balls' rule? Or better yet, a referee/racker?

If somebody asked me to re-rack a perfectly acceptable rack of balls several times...I'd get furious...

Would you be madder if some guy was racking his own and and racked 'em in a specific order, making the wing or head ball in the same pocket, every time, leaving strangely similar runouts, every time.
Neutral racker interviews begin Wednesday. Volunteer positions available, must be impartial.

Sounds like it went pretty well and I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed what you saw. Nobody could deny that Sunday featured three superb players.

FYI, the only session I made it to was the Friday night one.

For the fans, this event was surely one of the poorer values in pool. Premier events played in premier venues like the US Open, BCA Open, US Open or WPBA Nationals don't charge any more for admission that this event did. This was a $15,000 added non-rankings event played in a poolroom that should not have been priced as a premium event.
I also only went to the Friday session. I planned to go Saturday as well, but was surprised to find out admission had been raised to $40. It wouldn't have been half as bad if some brochure or flyer had warned me of that little fact in advance, as per the Sang Lee International at Carom Cafe.

As it turned out, I had much more fun last year when I was a constant feature on the bleachers every day of the event excepting the finals. I also think a great deal more people were in attendance then.

sjm, you know how much I paid in admission at the DCC? $18, if I remember correctly! You are certainly right about the poor value to fans.

I'd congratulate him on a perfect break stroke and great runouts. It would be legal, so no room for complaints.

But that cannot be done of course, at least not without sardo rack. Even with sardo, there are still many variables left. Or is there really a secret to racking everyone knows about except me? Somehow I doubt it.

Yes and no. There are secrets and you are not the only one who doen't know them. No doubt about it.

I don't charge spectators, i am always glad if they show up.
This year i had a Ringgame with: Bustamante - Immonen - Engert - Souquet - Van den Berg - Feijen and Chamat, who where playing for $8000,- almost 300 people showed up, why should i charge them, they drink and eat, at least 75% does.

By the way my 9-ball tournament had 350 entries, all paying $40,- entryfee, and of corse no charge for spectators.....

Feijen is the perfect example of practice makes perfect. He practices long
and hard, and it is starting to pay off for him.

As far as racking, yes there are many secrets to racking, depends on
where the breaker is breaking from and with what english.... and players
don't give them up, just like they don't want to give up a good break
shot.

Oh I know, I saw the whole match. Crosby had a 2 9 combo which left the 9 hanging, and Earl had to spin the cueball to make the three ball combo. I didn't mean to turn this into an argument about Earl, just thought that that was an interesting tidbit that ended my night.

Well,

Tony should not have played that combo, it was VERY low percentage and anything but STRAIGHT IN; he was anxious to win the match and jumped on this very low percentage shot. Tony played good through the entire tournament and was VERY capable of running out the table as it layed.

About the day/night passes:

Geez, that is expensive; why not just enter the tournament for $250 and you can play (even if you're knocked out) and watch as long as you want.

About racking:

The tournament started out with the opponent racking but Marc Vidal was having a problem with the racks, I can't remember who he was playing ( I think it was Paul Carbin ) but Jose and Bill had to rack. After this problem occured one more time (between different players) it was decided that you could either "rack your own" or have the opponent rack for you.

It was alternate break, and they started out with the usual bit of the opponent racking. But after endless reracks in the first few games, it seems they agreed to do rack-your-own, with the opponent checking afterward. Strangely enough, Ralf had 2 on the snap in his first 3 or 4 tries, but that was off Niels' rack. None afterward, or in the final, as far as I can remember.
