"Big" Cue Collectors

If you collect and your train of thought is what I will "make" when I sell.. that is NOT collecting that is investing and it is different. These two things should never be confused with each other, and they aren't synonyms. If you buy 10-50-100 cues and your concern or goal is to make money, you are an investor, not a collector. If you collect cues, you do it for the love of the collection, not for the love of profit.

I'd rather spend 50k on gold eagles .... Selling cues ... You have to find someone that really wants it .... You have to store them properly ... If they get wobble / damged ... No good .... And I literally don't care about ivory intricate rings of gold and silver .... It's over kill on a cue and seems silly. Also I don't really attach nostalgia to a certain maker ... It's wood gets turned on a lathe ... A good cue maker is as good as any of the others .... So I'm not paying up for that... South West cues... Yuck no thank you.

just like this cue just posted ... 6k? i struggle to find where 6k of value is in that cue. probably just me. to me that looks like a $2 - 2.5k cue... i dont see it any higher

Not my cue to put a price on, however at that number it’s a pass for me.

Tikkler (rip) had Gus I really liked. He wanted 18 for it. 13-13.5 I thought was the right number. I heard he sold it for 14, not certain about that. Point is anyone can ask what they like. Until the number reaches what the market or specific buyer will pay, like anything it’s an ask.

I’ve bought exactly one coin in my life. ½ oz of gold for $700 years ago. Coins just don’t move me. I went to a coin show with a friend, he had almost a million in coins. It looked like a big trap to me. I passed on all that. Not my bag. The only coin I like is that $20 high relief gold coin they made one year-it’s kinda cool.

Stocks, lol-I’d be dead. I had stocks once I woke up every morning with my heart beating out of my chest at 5am. And I only had $20K in action. I’d be dead long ago if I played that game. Oh God I’m getting stressed just thinking about it. And I broke even, I was never down $1. I just ain’t made for stocks. M

Cars, watches and cues have all treated me well. I can drop $20k on a cue and not blink. But I mostly know what I’m doing and if I do lose, all good. Overall cues have done well for me.

People have different risk tolerances in life. I’ve been broke, rich, broke, rich a few times. But never broke broke. That’s just not acceptable. Layer and layers to the onion. Self insurance,

Being average is my biggest fear in life, being broke or having a 9-5 are my 2nd biggest fear(tied). I respect the hell out of those who can and do work 9-5’s I just don’t have the discipline or energy. I can’t do it. I’m aware of my shortcomings. Adjust

Done preaching,

Fatboy <——-getting by best I can. I don’t like getting old. It’s not working for me, ofc I’ll adjust as I have no choice. And I’m not planning on checking out early, that’s a losers mentality

Or i would rather take that money and trade stocks....
I respect that.

If I was cut out for stocks, no doubt they would have outperformed what I’ve accomplished along the way.

But as mentioned above I’d have died of a heart attack probably 20-25 years ago.

It’s an interesting topic how somethings are one way for one person and the opposite for another. I suppose that’s what makes life interesting.

Everyone has opportunities and interests that help shape their lives ..... we all get drawn in different directions and develop from those journeys .... i guess that is what makes networking so powerful ....

your start a business ... you get clients .... they spread the word and you start getting more business.

a friend of mine hangs around in pool halls and picks up on business owners to get new clients or other people skilled in his area of expertise to hire when he needs help on bigger projects .... he just talks and networks with them.

thats all I’ve really done in life. Put deals together. I don’t have the interest in making $ that I once did. Now I’m more interested in where I’m at and enjoying whats happening.

The rush of closing a deal and making money isn’t like it once was. Now that doesn’t do much for me. Funny how things change.

What’s next? Dunno

I would agree. We took some gold Krugs on a cue purchase about 2 years ago.. they were 1800 each, we received 10. We still have them. Could we have turned 18K into 26K+ in the same timespan. Maybe, but it was not a concern then and not now. They are market regulated and much safer than relying on internet hype and coins are never going to be the "next" Balabushka and you aren't waiting for that cuemaker to shit the bed and piss people off. Also the government is giving tax breaks on bullion buys, they aren't doing the same thing for cues. :)
As far as assessing value based on how a cue looks, simplifies it for you, but the reality is the brand matters. Two watches do the same thing but a Timex is still a far cry from a Rolex. Personally, I use my Iphone, but occasionally I might throw a watch on. It is a cheap watch, but it is sentimental.
Collectors have to love collecting, that has to be first and foremost. If you are lucky enough to collect the real high-end cues, maybe there are 6-12 makers that constantly stay strong, then you can be "both" and at the end, be lucky to escape with some extra. Make smart choices, I always will reference my friend who asked my opinion on two 2500-dollar cues. I recommended one, he went the other way because it was fancier.. well that did not work out for him. He chose a McDaniel ivory dagger cue, over Barry Szamboti's 200th cue which was a plain titlist. You do not need to be a rocket scientist to know which one today has a better cash out value.
I fell in love for old paper money, primarily for the historical relevance. But the values are based on a real grading scale that is generally accepted throughout the market. The value of a restored bill will never be that of an original uncirculated bill. This is a major aspect I find missing in cues and always have.
