Well, I just got my Porper Big Shaver into action tonight. It has ports to:
Finish the top of the ferrule
Trim the sides of the tip
Shape the tip
Burnish the tip
Finishing the tip sort of works but the port which guides the ferrule seems a bit loose. I say you still want a cue top sander. Overall, I would say this port is barely functional.
Trimming the sides of the tip. You put the ferrule in the hole, line up the cutter and tighten the tapered pressure bolt. Then you just turn. It trimmed the tip fine without marking the ferrule. I can see how it could mar the ferrule, but mine did not. This process was slow, but worked well.
Tip Shaper.. .Don't bother to use this! Sandpaper on a curved surface would be best!
Burnisher. . .Works fine, but leather seems to give a nicer finish. Still, this port works.
Overall, I would give this tool a 3 out of 5 stars. Unless mine is bad for some reason, other than trimming, this tool is not of high value. Still it does get the job done.
Anyone else having similar issues? Seems like just focusing on a $50 trimmer would have been better than making a $100 all in wonder tool which doesn't work all that well.
