Bigger, Stronger Break!

I'm trying to improve my break and decided to post on here to see if we can't "pool" our resources and see if anyone can help me get a bigger and better break.
I was also wondering if I should even be working on my breaks yet. I've only been playing pool for 1.5 years and "I can make a ball or two" but am always looking to improve my game. Any suggestions on the next step?

Colin had a break vid that was pretty f'n spectacular imo..But i can not remember the site its on to save my life at moment.

Anybody got that saved?

It was a nice tutorial as well.

MULLY'S TEN MINUTE BREAK LESSON

Put all 15 balls along the end rail. Stand behind them. Take one ball and put it on the foot spot. Get down and shoot it into the corner pocket with a medium speed. Don't jump up, don't do anything crazy, just stroke that ball into the corner.....not using a cue ball, just shoot the ball into the pocket. Do all 15 balls like that. Make sure you are hitting the back of the pocket and not getting any of the cushion going in. If you're doing it right you'll hear the difference. If you're comfortable with that speed, notice I said speed and not power, if you're comfy with that speed and can hit the back of the pocket get the balls out again and do it again only this time a little faster. Continue upping your speed of your stroke on each round of 15 balls until you can't hit the back of the pocket each time. If you can't hit the back of the pocket then your arm is probably swerving so back off of it.

Once you feel you're doing the best you can, rack the balls, get into position to break. Now here is the key point, the reason you're shooting into the back of the pocket during the practice rounds is that you're working on hitting that one ball square. If you're going in on either side of the pocket that means that when you're breaking you're going in on either side of the rack. You want to hit that one ball dead on. Now, when you get down to break DO NOT do anything different. Same stance, same stroke. Don't throw your body into it. Stroke it the exact same way you were stroking those practice shots. I guarantee you will see an improvement in your break in as little as 5 minutes.

oh, you may want to put the ball just in front of the spot as diagrammed. Balls tend to slide off of those paper spots.

CueTable Help

Thanks Southpaw...I think that may be the same video...actually I think it is.

But it wasn't youtube,it was some pool related site..maybe they hosted the vid on youtube.

Many thanks for posting the link,I was going to,but I got lost on remembering where to find it.

Hopefully you already have a break cue and not just some cheap production cue to hit with. I was breaking with a cheap Cobra Cue (not a break cue) and playing 9 ball I would be lucky to make a ball period. As soon as I bought my J&J Break Cue very rarely do I NOT make atleast a ball or two on the break.

I also used to be bad about placing my back hand on the very end of the butt. I was told to choke up and try it (I put my back hand all the way up to where the handle screws off to make it a jump cue) and it has made a big difference. I made 5 solids the other night playing 8 ball. No telling how many times I've broke in the 8 or 9 since I bought a break cue. This was my first year of APA league and already have a 9 on the snap patch and I break from the box (generally middle diamond, sometimes I move a diamond right or left depending on how the table breaks).

But just a simple grip changed my game.

Am I crazy? I realized that by pausing rite at the end of the draw back before pulling the trigger you can actually get more power into the break.

Sort of like what Bustamante does.

The Break Rak

I was a weak 4 rating in TAP league that could not break worth a lick just 4 years ago. The Break Rak was the best thing that ever happened to my break. This video is not meant to show you a good technique to break because I'm still just a 6 and a c player. The vid is meant to show you how much breaking practice you can get in a short time. I love it.

I guess I should post a quick video of one break shot. I don't quite park whitey but there is some power here. Way more power than I had less than a year ago before I got the Break Rak. The cloth on the table is really slow so I have to hit em hard to get a road map layout.

I don't remember the name of the guy who sells the Break Rak but he gave me an hour long phone lesson on breaking and this is my way of thanking him.

.

In my opinion you should learn to break with a regular cue with a leather tip. A good break comes from your stroke and not the cue. A break cue that was designed for breaking will make the job easier but it's not a magic cue, you still need to learn how to break.

You should do that on any shot and not just the break....
It's not making the shot more powerful but more accurate.

WOW.... I must say that is a fine break..... WOW.

And thanks for all the help friends!

Thank you very much for saying so. I still need more control and it's easy on an 8 foot table. When I bought the Break Rak the guy who sells them told me you start off with straight accuracy and don't break too hard. Then just progressively hit them harder and harder and harder always focusing on control.

I would like to get a break rak but I don't have the money for it at the moment. I do know a few people who have them and love them. Jimmy Wetch, the owner of the pool hall I work at used to have one but got rid of it a while ago.... curse him.
