I'm looking for titles of books written by players, people following players... things of this nature, not instructional books. There's the Green felt Jungle that's got an advertisement link here on the forum. What's the name of Grady's book, is it Kiss shot or something like that? There's another book that I think is titled off the rail. If you guys can correct me on these titles and give me more titles of books like these I would greatly appreciate it.

Wasn't someone on here selling a book to help raise money for something? I had pretty much just signed up and was rarely coming on here then but it seems like I remember something to that effect happening.

Thanks in advance for your help!

:)

I would like to read ..

is a book about the Old West days, and famous
cowboys that liked to shoot Pool, or stories involving
Pool from those days. Were there any gunslingers that
had to shoot their opponents because of a dispute over
a Pool game?

Also, I would enjoy turn of the century stories about Pool,
perhaps a Boston or New York setting.

Off the Rail - David Macumber on the road w/ Tony Annigoni and the other book is You Bet Your Life by Danny Diliberto and Jerry Forsyth ( If I remember correctly) which was sold in cd form to raise money for Bludworth's wife

Bet High, Kiss Low By Grady
Playing of the Rail By Mccumber (a professional writer)
Cornbread Red (by a guy from Detroit ?)

Do It For The Game - Robert Campbell

McGoorty - Robert Byrne

The Hustler- Tevis

The Color Of Money Tevis

Buddy Hall's Book - The Rifleman?

Hustler Days - R. A. Dyer

What I've found so far...

I just found & bought the following...

Byrne's Book of Great Pool Stories

McGoorty : A Pool Room Hustler (Library of Larceny)

Hustler Days: Minnesota Fats, Wimpy Lassiter, Jersey Red, And America's Great Age Of Pool

Playing Off the Rail: A Pool Hustler's Journey

I would like to have Buddy Hall's book but from what I was able to gather in another thread, it's quite hard to come by. I couldn't find Do it for the game on half.com or amazon. I'll keep checking, thanks!

If you get a copy of Byrne's Advanced book (the exact name escapes me right now) there are several stories in it about some noted players. Some players profiled were Raymond Ceulemans, Torbjorn Blomdahl, and Alex Higgins. Also there was a story about the movie "Baltimore Bullet".

Buddy Hall :Rags to Riflemen. Then What? by W.W. Woody is a good book but went for over 100 bucks on the latest Ebay auction and it wasn't even in mint condition. Mine is and its signed :)

Bet High, Kiss Low is a good read but it's pretty much a x-rated book. If you're not easily offended, its worth getting.

McGoorty is awesome. The new cover isn't nearly as good as the old one though. The old cover had a cool painting of a hustler on a carom table and above the title is a lovely blonde in the buff surrounded by liquor bottles. Fits the book too; Danny McGoorty was definately an original.

Willie's Game is the Mosconi bio. Good, not great. I'd get the others above first unless you're a big Mosconi fan. I haven't read Minnesota Fats book (The Great Bank Shot and Other Robberies, I think its called )

A number of snooker players have biographies out but I haven't read them. Try amazon.uk for them. Alex Higgins and Jimmy White are interesting people so their books might be worth getting.

Is the Diliberto cd still available? Anyone know where to get a copy?

****Timberly: I have an extra copy of Do It For The Game if you want it; you just pay shipping and I'll send it to you. PM me if you want it.

You're AWESOME! Thanks Bud. Even with all the info that DM so kindly gave to me, I couldn't locate the book on any of the sites that I went to. :(
Send me a PM with how much you want for the shipping & how you want me to pay for it. Thanks again, that's a very kind & generous offer. :)

Hi Timberly,
Here was a thread posted a month ago (I missed it, too):

http://www.azbilliards.com/vbulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=14452&highlight=balukas+book

Christopher lists a lot of books, mostly instructional ones, but still it's a nice list. Not mentioned in this thread, but asked about in that one, was the book by Jean Balukas: "Pocket Billiards" (published in 1980).

I have a nice copy that a fellow lurker gave me (Thanks CJ!). Even though the title suggests it is an instructional book, it is actually more of an autobiography, which I found fascinating (there is basic instruction in the last chapter). You really appreciate the competitiveness and fearlessness of Jean at an age when most of us are getting the courage to ride our bikes! If you can find this gem, it's great to have in your personal library.

Happy Hunting! :)

If someone were kind enough to lend it to me, I wouldn't have to go hunting. Didn't you know it's not hunting season?? ;) (sigh) if you & CJ don't find me trustworthy, I understand... I guess. :(

OK, I guess I trust you.... I'll bring the copy with me to the next Planet Pool event...as long as I don't have to play Shawn in the first or second round...so pull some strings for me, ok? ;)

Ok, here's what we'll do... I'll bat my eyelashes @ Nick & Andy... you bat your eyelashes at Ceci & we'll see how far that gets us. :D :D

a lot of these books were published more than 10 years ago. is there anything more current? I'd like to find one which features more of my favorite player, efren reyes. Steve Mizerak's book lists efren among his top ten, but only mentions him twice in the book. byrne's book doesn't even mention efren, or any of the great contemporary players, at all.

The way the pool world has changed over the last 10 yrs or so, there really isn't anything to write about the contemporary players. If you're wanting entertaining road stories like I'm looking for, you're not going to find too many with most of today's players. There's a few guys out there with a couple of colorful stories but not too many that I'm aware of. :( It seems like everything is about tournament play these days & hardly any gambling or hustling anymore. It used to be after a pro tourney, the pool room would be jumping all night with people matching up. Now they go back to their hotel rooms or go see a movie. People still gamble but nothing remotely close to what they used to IMO.
