billiard shaft or new stick?

I'm rather new to the game of Carom Billiards but i've been practicing a little and been getting much better. I even want to play in the houston USBA qualifier... since i can't find any tourny's or players closer to me to play with. I'm to the point where i'm considering either getting a billiard cue or a shaft for my Schon. I've tried out a few billiard cues from some guys down in Roundrock, TX and liked them very much, but i think i'de rather just get a shaft as i don't want to spend the money on a new stick and don't want to weigh down my case anymore than it already is.

Does anyone have any suggestions?... perhaps some prices as well?

Thanks,

But for the cost of a shaft - You could buy a cheap carom cue like this

or

Then There Tiger, Schuler, Crown Cues, and other Carom Cues that are reasonable price.

I bought one of these to have as a house cue.

If you buy on of these cues, be aware that they are very butt heavy. However, if you remove the weight bolt, you should be pretty happy with it. Also, they have a strange taper to the shafts. They are not constant tapered. They have a sort of combo pool/carom taper. However, all that aside. You will not find a more affordable cue.
