I was browsing through the Accu-Stats online catalog and ran across the following. Does anyone know what the "controversial Sigel/Reyes semi's" was about?

Item: Peter Vitalie Invitational 9-Ball
SKU: PV-87

Price: $29.95

Weight: 1.000 lbs.
This is a unique documentation of this historic event held in 1987 at the Biltmore Hotel in L.A. It commences with interviews with many of the days top players, and then edited with highlights of the matches that led to the finals, including the controvertial Sigel/Reyes semi's. The two out of three sets - race to 7 finals - has Mike Sigel and Buddy Hall in battle for the $15,000 first place prize money (very big for the era). Between sets there are trick shot demonstrations by Nick Varner, Jim Mataya, and Morro Paez. The commentary is by local sports anchor Christina Kosak and Ronnie Allen. At the conclusion of the match, there are informative interviews with Sigel and Hall and then the awards presentation. At the very tail end, with the credits, the critical moments in the Sigel/Reyes match are shown. All in all, a very entertaining experience. By the way, the tournament was originally shot on film, so the quality of the tape holds up well. (193 min.)

Yes, Janice and I were there. There was a rule that if any player during his or her match, broke his cue down, he lost that match. I do not remember why Efern broke his cue down, but he did. The entire floor of the hotel was rockng. Efern's countymen wanting to get in the sold out house, were stomping there feet and chanting, Efern, Efern, on and on for about an hour.

Jay let Efern play even thought he was the guy who laid out the rules.
The table were bad. The pockets were so deep, Mike, me and Buddy, placed a ball so deep that if you took a shot to just hit it in at the point, you would miss the whole ball. This is the best I can remember it, hell it was 18yrs ago.Been many a mile in the last 18 or so.

Do you remember what the controversy was about that led to Efren taking his cue apart? I've got the tape, but they don't really show it. Apparently there was a foul called on Reyes that he disagreed with, and there was a bit of arguing between him and Jay and Mike, and Jay ruled it was a foul. Efren broke down his cue as Mike had what looked liked a pretty easy shot on the nine, and then of course after all the hulabaloo he proceeded to miss the nine, hanging it in the pocket. Mike still won the match, and then beat Buddy Hall two sets in the finals to win the tournament. In the interview afterward Sigel said he would never forget what Reyes did.

I watched part of a 14.1 tournament at the Biltmore in January of '71, but can't remember who was playing. How can I find out?
