I just posted this in a thread in response to an inquiry in the main forum and ended up thinking that is would make a good fit in this section. I do love my Thompson. :D

I can heartily recommend Bob Thompson cues. I bought the top cue from this pic from AZB'er rugerfan (who can answer more questions about Thompson cues) back in the summer and have been loving it ever since:

These cues have a slimmer butt profile and the shaft taper is unique to Thompson - it a modified version of the pro taper that stays thinner longer. Another excellent aspect of Thompson cues is that the weight is located in the forearm of the cues, so the cues remain better balanced. Thompson is a master woodworker that specializes in custom accustic guitars, but he has been producing limited numbers of cues for about 30 years. He also makes some kick-a$$ long bows.

His cues are underrated and under the radar to an extent, therefore you can get some serious value for your $. I paid only $250 for the top cue above and consider it money well spent. I'll keep this one for a lifetime.

Not to sound like an informercial or anything, but Thompson has produced some truely unique cues that rival any of the high end stuff out there, imo. Check these out:

I guess the bottom line is that I'm now a fan.

About 5 years ago Jim Oswald at BilliardsNBagels had started to get Thompson cues in. While very few where aesthetically pleasing to me, the all played wonderfully. He also makes bows and acoustic guitars. Jim had an acoustic guitar and a bow in the shop. The bow was amazing, but the guitar was nothing special in my book. Lots of abalone, nice wood, but no tone and the fit was not up to the finish, if you know what I mean. I cannot remember who taught Bob, but I want to say Mike Erwin for some reason, but I may be and probably am, completely wrong on that one.

Thanks for posting the review on Thompson cues!

While Bob isn't afraid to step outside the box with his designs, some traditionalist find his cues "too busy". With that being said, there are plenty of players/collectors who are looking for something different that stills plays outstanding. Bob's cues scratch that itch and then some.

Bob is pretty much building guitars full time now but if you like his design and want to have something built, hit me up. I may be able to sweet talk him into building your dream cue...

As far as Bob's guitars being under snuff, check out his website and watch the artist videos (all the background music is played with his guitars) and then you decide.

Bob sold the bow business a few years back so he could focus on his instruments. He has some serious old-school talent.
