bois de rose question

I'm in the planning stages for a custom sneaky. I'm looking for reviews on how bois de rose plays. Is it the same hit as other rosewoods? Is it stiff or pingy? Does it have a crisp hit or does it thud? Do you get a lot of buzz, or does it feel dead? I think it would look sharp on a sneaky style cue, but playability is king. Let me know what you think!

so warpage is an issue? i've seen some bois de rose kikels out there, i wonder how he got around that issue?

This is my BdR cue...

The maker of this cue build the blank from scratch, from a very seasoned piece of BdR. I have experienced no movement of the wood whatsoever...no coring, either.

BdR is very much like Tulipwood, also a rosewood, in that they both require a good deal of seasoning before they will be anywhere near stable for use without coring.

IMHO, it plays quite well, having a lively, crisp feel. Great feedback. I have been told that it 'feels' very much like a Brazilian rosewood. I just love my cue and have no plans of ever parting with it...I count myself lucky just to have it! :yeah:

What about kingwood? Is it in the rosewood family? Is it stable, and how does it play?

Yes, kingwood is in the rosewood family, so it should have the great feedback characteristics that rosewood is known for. I believe it may be a more stable wood than either the BdR or Tulip...but Joey knows wood better than I, with regards to working with it....he will likely have a better answer for you than I.

Lisa <====likes rosewoods. :thumbup:

thanks for the input everyone. and thanks for the pics lisa, that's a nice cue! my wife would love that cue, pretty butterflies. i love b d r, i may have to buy a piece and sit on it a few years-not literally for you gigglers- to stabilize it. the misses said 2 yrs before i can indulge in a new cue, unless i sell one i already own:(. thanks again

I would suggest that you try and find a piece rather soon...as it is getting snapped up from the suppliers...my understanding is that there is a moratorium on the harvesting of trees in Madagascar...there is a lot of civil strife going on there currently. Also, some makers will not work with it, as it bleeds like a stuck pig all over everything while turning...and can stain lighter colored woods if the maker isn't diligent.

If you are wishing for a future full spliced cue...either with or without veneers, you will need to find a piece at the minimum of 24" long and at least 1.5" wide.

If you can find such a piece, and are willing to wait it out, and find the right maker, you will have a very, very nice playing cue!

Oh...BTW, thanks so much for the compliments on the cue! I had requested the butterfly butt, and had asked for it to be Satinwood, which it is, but the veneer colors were a complete surprise, and really 'pop' the whole cue. It's a great player.
