Booing at a pro tournament

Has anyone ever booed, or heard anyone boo at a pro tournament? One where the fans are paying for admission?

This is common practice by fans in all sports where they are not satisfied by the action of a player. But it doesn't seem to happen in pool.

Of course we all know that Earl gets heckled all the time, but he really is the only one that I have heard of this happening to. And he doesn't get booed.

I am referring to palyers who play slow. And I am not referring to Charlie Williams who everyone says plays slow but whenever I put a clock on him I never saw him take longer than 45 seconds and most of his shots are done in less than 30 seconds

I am referring to the top women who I just found out have taken as long as 6 to 8 minutes between a shot. What do they do? Sit down and have a cup of coffee and smoke a cigarette between a shot?

If a pitcher, or golfer, or tennis player would do that the boo birds would be all over them.

if pool is so damned willing to pimp the game in order to bring in a bigger audience, then i think they SHOULD allow booing. :)
 
And they say pool players have no class!!! I don't think I've ever seen it. I also don't think we need it. Sam
 
I have only booed one player ever and that was at the 2003 US open. That was Phabio Petronie I think this is how you spell his name the guy from Italy. The only reason that I did this was because during the National Anthem when they ask every one to please rise he walked out to go smoke on the way out I saw Corey Deuel stop him and say something about it and he Just kept walking. After I saw that I was rooting aginst him the whole tournament. It is kind of a slap in the face to me because I am an American and I am in the USMC. :mad:
 
The only time I would EVER consider booing a player of any sport is if the player displayed very poor behavior. Even then I think it would have to be continuous poor or unsportsmanlike behavior.

Raydog,
I dont want to stir up trouble but if you were in Italy and they played their National Anthem, would you stop what you doing and showed that kind of respect?
 
Well I guess I was right and wrong. Pool players do have class although some don't show it. You sir, did the right thing. I believe he should have shown some class and and stood in the room with the rest of the players. I guess maybe some players should be booed, maybe before or after, but I'd still prefer not during.

It is not stiring up trouble but in the Marine Corps we are taught to show respect for all foreign countries National Anthems and Colors I was Stationed in Japan for one year and Stood at attention for there anthem every day so to answer your question I would have to say yes I would stand still because it is a matter of respecting the people around you and the culture that you are in. :)
 
I have booed a player only one time, while, to my disgust, others were cheering. You'll never guess who it was. That's right, it was Earl Strickland. At the 2000 US Open, Earl pointed his cue directly in Takeshi Okamura's face during the finals, accusing Okamura of moving while Earl was breaking, which caused the CB to fly off the table. This was at least the 2nd time the CB flew off the table while Earl was breaking. Couple of points here: 1. Takeshi was sitting BEHIND Earl, so how could Earl see him move; and 2. Okamura never moved at all. It was a shark move on Earl's part, plain and simple, and fans were actually CHEERING when Earl did it. I was disgusted not only by Earl but by the fans who cheered on his behavior. It made me feel ashamed to be a player. After that moment, and it was close up until that point, Okamura just faded away. I think he won one more game after that.

I'm not trying to stir up anything either. I agree with Raydog, when you go to someone else's country to play in an event, or even visiting for that matter, you show some respect for their national anthem. If anyone on this site competes in other countries, in any sports, what do you say about this? Sam

He could have waited for two minutes until it was over or he could have smoked before the match. I smoke myself and I know that to have to wait a few minutes will not kill you plus if he wanted he could have said to the other player that he was going to go smoke before they started he already had his cues there so I am sure that they would not of forfited him they also give you a 15 minute grace period to show up for the match that he could of used 5 minutes of this time.

Around here, hockey, baseball and soccer are the big sports. At every game, whether facing another American team or not, they play the Canadian anthem as well. I expect the Canadians, if any, in attendence to show respect for our flag and anthem, as I respect theirs. If I were in Italy and the national anthem was played, I would respect theirs as well.

I've only met Fabio once, at the Capitol City Classic. Can not remember anything about him now other than his "classical" Italian good looks. I don't remember his game being exceptional. Then again, I'll be sixty.

The guy plays some great pool I just did not like what he did.

i forgot if it was last year or 2...i think it was the olympics maybe maybe not when the US and Canada had a rivelry in hockey...i forgot when but the countries anthems were being booed.
 
I guesse out of respect to the place you are visiting one should stick around for the national anthem....then again they are not obligated to no big deal.
 
I don't think it's disrespectful not to respect the national anthem of another country, but walking out _during_ it is disrespectful. Anyway, it's a common way to listen both/all national anthems standing up in any sports.

Yeah, I remember that. Wasn't it something to do with the Gulf war? Actually somehow it sticks in my brain as a Bluejays game.

It is not a question of allowing or disallowing booing, anybody can boo at anytime they choose. Railbirds aren't subject to rules imposed by the organizers, just subject to what might or might not be in good taste.
