I notice that this book...

[The Lions and the Lambs - Fensch, Thomas - 1970]

...is selling for $1,023.75 on Amazon. Why does this book have such a high value?

Just supply and demand or something?

They can ask for anything they want. I thought I already posted the prices I've seen for "Lions and the Lambs" on RSB -- none of the five or so sales was over $120 as I recall. I've also seen a Dover paperback that routinely sells for $10 on Amazon with an asking price of $220. If they can find a sucker, they were certainly right to ask for that much, especially if they have 5 crates of the books in the back room.

WOW. I've been looking all over for a reasonable price and can't seem to find anything under $975. It's just ridiculous. For that price, I want copyrights!!! I'll then gladly resell my republished version to everyone here for $10!!!

Supply and demand. There was only one printing, and few books printed at that. Now the book is getting to be a pretty valuable collectible book. Bob Jewett listed some selling prices of this book on Ebay over the last five or six years. Most of them were several years old and don't really have any relation to what the book might cost today. It would be a miracle today to get one for anything less than $200 if the book is in very good condition with dust jacket. If the book is in excellent condition with the dust jacket $300-$400, and in mint or near mint $500-$700. That doesn't mean that you can't find one or get lucky. Amazon will quote you a price that has automatic room for a big profit in it because they are not stocking the book. They will always be a little higher than just looking around for yourself because you are hiring them to look around for you basically.

I have a couple copies of the book in near mint condition with dust jackets. I purchased one in 1989 for $2 at a used book store in San Francisco. The other I recently purchased for $285 in January. I will say that I probably wouldn't sell either at this point for anything less than $400-$500. And any that might find their way to Ebay which are in excellent condition or better will probably bring some good money, at least $200. You might be able to find a reading copy for considerably less money.
