Book Review: Hustler Days

I just finished reading this book and thought it was great! It was good reading about Lassiter and his illnesses and Jersey Red and his demons. The stuff about Fats was good but was pretty much general knowledge among pool players.

Overall I thought this book is an outstanding read and highly recommend it to everyone.

What are your thoughts?

Wife got it for me for fathers day. I am on page 89 right now. She also got me UPscale One pocket. I am in the process of memorizing the two, three, four, and five rail track zones and using them. One day, I am gonna be a hell of a one holer!!!!

I read both, too. If you memorize all them tracks in the one hole book, you will be awsome! He gives good advice on where to park the balls to keep the other guy from making full table banks, too. Hustler Days was a good read, too.

I thoroughly enjoyed it also. My biggest problem is that I can't put books like this, Playing Off the Rail, and McGoorty down, and I end up reading them all the way through in one sitting when the original plan is to savor them over a few days!

Fantastic Read!!! I really liked "Playing off the rail" also. I am now reading Minesota Fats "The Bank Shot...." and just like Bucktooths Banter in POTR I am getting tired of reading how Fats whacked out this guy, beat that guy and broke another guy. I would much rather read the stories than to read a list of names (including Ralph Greenleaf) he supposedly sent home broke. I figure if anyone that has been playing pool for more than a couple of years could spot a hustle a mile away. Esp names like Mosconi, Jersey Red, Cornbread Red and Greenleaf. But I guess that is what made Fats famous.

Anybody read Cornbreads Book or Willies Game (I am currently looking for a copy less than 50 bucks)?

I read Hustler Days last Thanksgiving weekend. I really enjoyed reading about not only the way these guys played but their lives away from the table and how they ended up where they did.

The tournament descriptions were sometimes a bit melodramatic but it is definitely a must-read for any real pool fan.


BTW I met Robert Byrne in Peoria. He has a new edition of McGoorty out. I think the only difference is a lot of new pictures. I'll probably pick one up.

I've read Cornbread Red by Bob Henning and thoroughly enjoyed it also. It starts in his childhood days in Fulton, KY, which is about 10 miles from where my family is from in Martin, TN. Based on the books you've enjoyed so far, you'll like this one too.
 
I haven't read Cornbread's or Willie's book. I'd love to a copy of Willie's for under $50. I just ordered Fat's book off eBay, should be here in a day or two. POTR was a great book also. I liked HD, 'cause it dealt with folks I was familiar with.

If anyone want's to sell a copy of Cornbreads or Willie's book let me know...

Hey I get first dibs on Willie's book. Cornbreads really isn't that hard to find. I see them on ebay pretty regularly.
