Bowling...like I'd never played it before

I was introduced to a new pool game tonight. Bowling. Has anyone here played it?

Break a rack of 10 ball. Shoot balls in any order. Any time a ball drops you keep shooting. You have 1 miss, break included. So, if you pocket a ball on the break, you can miss once and keep shooting. If you run out off the break, it's a Strike. If you miss once/don't make a ball on the break and run out, it's a spare. Score it just like you would bowling. 10 frames plus a possible 2 extra.

I found it quite enjoyable. Much easier than 9 or 10 ball of course, but the fact that you're keeping score makes it interesting.

Also, I learned a new way to rack 10 balls tonight. Use an extra stripe where the back of a 9 ball rack would be (the center of the balls). It helps you get things nice and tight. Then roll it off after you're finished racking. I'd never seen that before. Of course, I have only ever met one person who wanted to play 10 ball with me.;-)

Sounds fun, my brother is big into bowling, and I'm getting him into pool, he'll enjoy this!

Some guys were playing this locally, I offered to score > 200 in one try. They couldn't believe it, but wouldn't bet either (206 first try...). It's a fun game to play vs. a friend, esp if drinking, as you get time to sit and drink :D

Many times. If it's in the book, people have played it.

Do a search on these forums on "bowlliards."

I also found this site with rules http://infohost.nmt.edu/~billiard/house_rules/bowlliards.html

In this version it's a free break and all balls made on the break are spotted. You start both your innings from behind the head string.

In the link ccn7 posted it doesn't mention spotting balls after the break but it sounds like those rules are BIH anywhere on the table for your first and second attempts. I like that version better.

I also know it as bowliards. It's a lot of fun and there are many ways to handicap so many people can play and bet some. I printed score sheets from looking online for bowling score sheets.
Have fun!

The break is free, whether you make a ball or not. You have 1 miss after the break. If you run the balls after the break, it is a strike. If you miss, then you get BIH to finish the run out for a spare, otherwise you get the balls made for that frame (or trip to the table).

Around here, we just call it 10 ball, or 10 ball league, although its formal name is Bowliards.

They use it for handicapping here, too. I shot a 116 when I did it. Just below a 120, which is a handicap 8 (here), so I was disappointed to find out I wasn't an 8 yet. But, at least I'm close:)

I was reading the rules for this in the BCA rule book last night and I've got a couple questions as to how people play it using BCA rules.

1) In the book it mentions the free break and taking BIH behind the headstring after the break. After a miss it says to continue with your second turn immediately. It doesn't say anything about taking BIH either behind the headstring or otherwise.

Do you just shoot the ball from where it lies assuming their wasn't a foul on your missed shot?

2) The rules also mention nominating one ball and one pocket for each turn and they mention spotting illegally pocketed balls. Are incidental balls made when legally pocketing a ball spotted? For example, if I call the 1 in the corner and after I pocket the one the cue ball knocks the 2 in the side, does the 2 get spotted or do I get two points?

Thanks!
