The phenolic tip and ferrule are all one piece while the magic tip is installed on top of a short 1/4inch ferrule. The phenolic tip/ferrule combo to me looks like J&J attempt to replicate the sledgehammer break cue. They both break really well. Its just a matter of preference.
 
I agree ...

I just got one this weekend and these cheap babies break open a rack ... They have alot of bang in them for the buck... For the money you can't go wrong ...
