Hello All,

My playing cue has a 12mm shaft. I recently acquired a break/jump cue from a fellow member and that has a shaft that's close to 13mm. My question is, would you "take down" the break cue's shaft to 12mm? I'm asking is because since I've acquired the break cue, I find myself shooting with it a lot. Thanks....

I would never take a break shaft under 13mm unless you just want to have some fun.

Under 13mm your shaft will bend or flex so much, it's kind of fun but not a serious break shaft.

The lowest I would go is 12.75 on a break shaft, but that said it's probably best to leave the size of the break shaft at 13mm.

break shaft size

You know, I don't understand how most of you cats play with such small shafts. My playing shaft is usually 13.5 mm. I used to play with a 14 mm when I played bar pool with the big cue ball. It is about control. It is so much easier to hit stun shots, and the like, with a bigger shaft. The other reason I like a bigger shaft is because I like to hit 'em hard, especially playing 9 ball or banks. You get much less deflection with a bigger shaft. So, my personal preference??? I'll take the broom handle over the pencil.

I wouldn't take it down at all.

As far as playing with 13mm+ shaft ?

OOOOoohhhh Hellzzzz no.

Care to explain why you are shooting with your break cue?

Don't take it down past 13mm and don't change the taper.

I would take it down especially if its a carbon fibre or other non-wood material.

Especially metal. Make sure the shaft is at the most 5mm if it is metal.

The defection on a bigger diameter shaft actually increases. Because the area of the contact point on the tip is larger. That's why the ob2 has a lower deflection than. Ob1 because the shaft size on the ob2 is. 11.75 and ob1 is 12.25. You can hit just as hard with a small diameter shaft. The difference is with the larger diameter cue when breaking hard and flexing the shaft. I.e. Shane VanBoening does this. Your less likely to cause damage to the shaft because the larger the diameter it is the stronger it is. I have a break cue that is 13mm and my shaft sizes on my shooting cue are 11.75 and 12.25. Also the ferell is a factor in density. (Length and material)

I have a Paul Mottey jump/break cue. I like the hit after hitting some balls with it. It has a thicker butt than my playing cue, BCM. After hitting a couple of racks with it, that's when I went to my playing cue and thought of the "reducing of the shaft." I just noticed the huge difference with my stubby little fingers  after switching.
