i got a question to ask and i know my knowledge on cues is very limited so please bare with me.

my current break cue is rather on the heavy side. (20oz or more) i got guys at the poolhall saying that with a break cue, a lighter one would be more ideal as you can generate more velocity with it to give a better break. is this true?

also, any recommendations on a good break tip? i think mine needs a changing. :o

i personally prefer a 20 or 21 oz break cue.. its true that you get more speed with a lighter cue but with a heavier one i get alot more break up power and can usually always park the cue ball right around center table..

18.2 here. I nice light cue gets the cueball moving faster, or at least that's the theory I subscribe too. It has teh Xtreme tip onm it developed by Richard and the team at Xtreme Billiards for his break cues.

Well I know people are going to give me hell about it, but I break with a 24.5 ounce cue with a hard water buffalo tip.

I also have a break cue that is 28.5 ounces. However most tournaments only allow 25 ounces.

With both cues I get a solid break, and I also tend to get the cue ball in the middle of the table. On eight ball I pocket a ball more times than not, and in 9 ball I almost always pocket a ball.

I hear a lot of people love a lighter cue, but I can't break for heck with a lighter cue, so I will stick with what works for me.

I used to have a 21 oz break cue and was happy with it, until i ordered a set of custom cues,,, and to try something else i ordered the new break cue a bit lighter and i must say i break a lot better now. It feels quicker, and faster to break with. I hit the cue ball much harder and my breaks sink more balls.

FWIW. My Stinger is about 18.5 ounces. I still need practice, but I usually get a good spread and am able to control the cue ball quite well. I would suggest that you simply try a few different weights and find one you are comfortable with. There are many threads and opinions on break cues on this forum, do a search and you might be surprised to see what you can find out.

Good Luck.

Does your break cue have a weight bolt?. Maybe you can remove it or put a lighter one in to see if this helps.
