Break Cue

When I started playing years ago, break cues didn't seem like they were a big thing, but now it seems like even the regular league players all have a break cue. I've owned a few myself and to be honest, I never really stuck with one long enough to learn how to put it to good use.

Now I'm back to thinking about getting one to use again. So, I'd like a few opinions and ask a few questions...

1. Do you use a break cue?
2. Do you think break cues should be allowed?
3. Do you use a combination jump/break?
4. Do you think using a break cue has helped your 8/9-ball game?
5. Can you recommend a budget break cue?

One thing I did enjoy about using a break cue is that I would take a little time after break and survey the table. I think I rush things a little these days. In any case, feel free to share your thoughts about break cues and what they have brought to (or taken away from) the game.

On a side note, are break cues allowed at the DCC? I'm pretty sure you have to jump with a full cue there, but I'm not sure if you can jump with a break cue. I'll go look it up... doesn't say specifically... just no jump cues.

Just a beginner, but yes I use a Break Cue, as does just about everyone I see and play with. But I see it most usefull to take the stress off your main shooter as Tips, and Shafts have become so expensive you wouldnt risk any accidents on such an important piece of equipment on a high powered break.

1. Yes, I find that they produce more QB speed for the effort, and doing so gives longer life to my soft playing tips.
2. Sure, I don't think it takes away from any aspect of the game.
3. Mine is, but I hardly use the jump portion outside of practice. I prefer to play billiards with kicking, and only use the jump cue if my opponent is using one.
4. It has helped my break which means more wins, but I can't say it really helps any other aspect.
5. I've heard good things about the J&J break cue, but I don't have any experience.

Depending on what you mean by budget, I would recommend to look at the OB break cues and the BK2. I personally don't really like low deflection playing shafts, but the break shot really brings out the best in them.

1. Do you use a break cue?
Yes, Lomax B/J. LOVE it.

2. Do you think break cues should be allowed?
Yes, they make a difference IMO and I don't ruin my playing tip. The game is evolving...so should the equipment.

3. Do you use a combination jump/break?
Yes, but I rarely use it as a jump cue.

4. Do you think using a break cue has helped your 8/9-ball game?
Yes, I feel I break BETTER with a dedicated cue for the task. Under 18 ounces, Samsara break tip...hard ferrule.

5. Can you recommend a budget break cue?
Everyone's budget is different....but a decent sneaky pete at the weight you like with a good break ferrule/tip combo will do the job, If your willing to spend some coin, I highly recommend a Lomax.

1. No
2. Does not matter to me.

1. Do you use a break cue? When I practice.
2. Do you think break cues should be allowed? Why not.
3. Do you use a combination jump/break? Yes, but getting a Denali Break and a Lomax Jump.
4. Do you think using a break cue has helped your 8/9-ball game? I am still working that out.
5. Can you recommend a budget break cue? Depends what your budget is.

1. Do you use a break cue?
- Used to until it warps.
2. Do you think break cues should be allowed?
- Sure, why not?
3. Do you use a combination jump/break?
- Prefer a break only cue cause I think the more parts a cue is in the more easier it'll warp.
4. Do you think using a break cue has helped your 8/9-ball game?
- 8-Ball - No idea. 9-Ball - Yes.
Since I always use a house cue/ my playing cue to do a soft break so the cue ball stays center and with a break cue my soft break can pot quite a no of balls.
5. Can you recommend a budget break cue?
- No idea. Cause my only break cue was a cheap custom-made one from a random taiwan cuemaker, but ive heard a lot of about the Predator BK2.

Need to better define the term budget but I think the BW break/jump sold at billiardwarehouse.com is about as good as its ever gonna get for less than $200. I use one and have been very very pleased with it.

1. yes, this "powerbreak" 80 dollar b/j, but only for 8ball
2. yes
3. yes b/j
4. i only use it for 8 ball since i dont break really hard in 9 or 10 ball. and in 8 ball only to not flatten out my playing tip
5. i use the "powerbreak" bj, i think its from j&j, gets the job done and is cheap. another option is the fury BJ, real good cue for the money.

but honestly, you dont need a break cue. i see people with 400 dollar+ breakcues and they break with less speed than i do with my playing cue. and i think for a 9 or 10 ball break CONTROL is far more important. and with which cue do i have most control? yes, with my playing cue :)

I have an Andy Gilbert J/B with a water buffalo tip i use for jumping, breaking and playing. I have other cues but right now this works for me.

I started a thread along these lines a few years ago. The result has been nothing short of happiness. I purchased a Lomax made shaft for my second Schon. We had a phone conversation and he agreed with CeeBee (in this thread: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=132787) that it is better to have a 2-pc jump cue than a 3 pc, and as long as balance is "ok" the taper, tip, and ferrule are the key aspects.

I also bought a break-rak from CeeBee and it has been one of the best pool investments that I have made. Since the lomax shaft didn't address the needs for jumping, I decided to buy his 3-pc jump cue as well. All 3 parts (shaft, 3 pc jump cue, break-rak) ran about $550 in 2009. Anyone who has used any of these 3 items have been nothing less than impressed.

the only reason i use a break cue is so that i don't blow a tip off my playing cue. I'm having one built to match my player, similar weight, taper, tip, etc.

my logic is you break better with your player because that's what your use to swinging.

best,

Justin
