was wondering what you shooters out there prefer to break with? and do you guys have a custom break cue?

i started with production break cues (cuetec, scorpion) and then had a custom break cue made out of bocote for me by Madison Bob (madisonbobs.com). recently i had Muellers make me a break shaft (10" taper, 13.5mm, hard tip) for my Cuetec butt and it seems to hit them pretty good too.

just curious what everyone uses for the break?

Im using a Sledgehammer.The biggest part of the break i think is the technique.Which Ive always struggled with, but after watching a few tapes and lots of practice.I think im starting to see an upward trend.
 
After trying many different break cues, for me the Sledgehammer is the only way to fly. What an awesome cue! I started out with it weighing 18.5 oz. which broke the rack wide open but I didn't always have good CB control and my timing had to be right on the mark. I increased it to 21 oz. and had good control but it didn't break the rack as well. I took it back down to 20.3 and get a tremendous spread on a full 15 ball rack, hardly ever with so much as even one cluster, or 9 ball rack. The CB control is there also.

What type of bolt did you use to add weight to your sledge? Im trying to experiment with the weight on mine.Did you get them from Gulyassy? Thanks
 
I also play with a sledgehammer. For a while I didnt like it because it wouldnt hold chalk and I couldnt control the cb. This guy I know at the ph I play at had a brand new Predator B/k and we traded break cues for a week. I hated the B/k, its too skinny and it felt weak but I had pretty good cb control. When I got my hammer back, I rack the balls and smashed the hell out of them. It seemed so much better and I was able to control the c/b. I scuffed the tip a little and now it holds chalk like a regular tip. I would say its the best on the market, however I would like to try Pete Ohman's grey ghost. Its supposed to be just as good.
 
I as well use a sledgehammer. I love the fact you don't have to worry about the tip flying off.
One of my pool buddies recently bought the black "Scorpion" break cue with those metal "power rings". As part of my handicap, I agreed to use it instead of my sledgehammer last friday. On my second break, I snapped it in two pieces. It broke at the forearm, not the shaft as one would think, about 3 inches from the joint. There were wood chards all over the table. Nobody said a word for about 10 seconds until one of the guys piped up and said, "nice break". Everyone laughed and made fun of the cue the rest of the night. Neddless to say, I'm not a fan of the Scorpion product. That damned wood the Scorpion folks use is dryer than a popcorn fart...take note Johnny Archer.
 
i use a Mali M-1. i love it! exactly 18oz. on the nose. the wrap, comes all the way down, almost to the butt cap, to accomadate, your long bridge on the break. the stainless steal joint is a powerhouse. i have a triangle 13mm tip on it, i never fuss with it. whoever i let use it once in a while, say's "that cue is one mother!" p.s. i tried the BK from predator, and it did nothing for me.

i use a new meucci power piston accelator. its the most solid hit breaking cue ive ever used..........
 
Brunswick off the rack. Come to think of it maybe that's why my break sucks.

I am not just saying this. This is true. If you like a heavy break cue mike wagner of raven cues make the best break cue, bar none. He has a flare at the butt for a better grip. Special tips that he makes, You don't even need to slam the rack hard and the balls go everywhere. They are 289.00 and worth every penny.
 
I just used my new Sledgehammer for the first time after work today, and HOLY COW! I spent about 15 minutes at the end of my session just racking and breaking over and over, and I am very impressed. It feels weird at first due to the clanky hit, but I can get over that. In that time span, I had these results:
Breaks with no balls made: 2
9 ball on break: 2
Three balls or more on break: 7(!)
All the rest were one or two balls sunk. Scratched twice, due to other balls knocking the cue around. Cueball control was surprisingly good.
These results are above my usual standard, to say the least.
I'm a believer.

Thanks.What size is that Allen head on the weight bolt? I have had a hard time trying to find an allen wrench to fit.

I had a hard time finding one also. I happened to stumble on an entire set of allen wrenches and ratchets that someone gave me and was hidden in my garage after almost giving up and sending it back to Gulyassy. I can't tell you if it was American or metric measurements. Do what I've done for some of my other cues, take the butt with you into Home Depot or Lowe's and just start trying different ones to see what fits. You'll know immediately. As I recall, the bolt was also extremely tight the first time I tried taking it out so use elbow grease.
