which is better to have the break cue shaft coated with the same finish as the butt or just leave it as plain wood. Would it produce better results with the coating on the shaft.

A clear coat finish on the shaft would not slide well through your bridge hand at all, unless you were wearing a glove. It most definitely would not improve the performance of the cue in any way.

A clear coated or varnished shaft gets real sticky very quickly.

I know of no reputable cue maker or production cue maker that puts a finish on the shaft. In fact, I've only seen it on cheap ramin wood house cues from China.

I prefer plain hard rock maple wood, and I burnish the snot out of it with a leather pad.
