Break Shaft on a Regular Butt

Does the butt of a break cue really make any difference? I have two Mike Erwin custom cues and am thinking of putting an OB Break Shaft on one of them. Would I get the same feel and "results" as I would with a full Break Cue? I don't really want to leave one of Mike's beautiful cues sitting in a case where no one sees it and figured this would be a cool way to use my matching set!

You'll probably get different responses, but I think if you're comfortable breaking with the cue with the regular shaft, you'll be fine breaking with it with a break shaft, and get basically the same "performance."

My break cue is significantly lighter than my playing cue, and my playing cue has an ivory joint, so I'd never break with it, but if the weight of the butt is what you like for a break cue, and the joint is something your comfortable leaning into on a hard break shot, I think you'll be just fine.

Just my opinion.

If your comfortable then more power to you. It would be a shame to let a beautiful cue sit unused.

:D

You can buy a good break shaft with a G-10 tip for just $50. Will be just as good as any shaft out there.

If interested, just send me a message.

I put an OB break shaft on an inexpensive cue, to replace it's warped shaft. I absolutely love it. It is a half ounce lighter than my playing cue, and is just what I wanted and works great for me.

It is absolutely possible that the two combinations will give different results. It is also absolutely possible that you will like the results with the Mike Erwin butt better. IMO you should try both combinations to see what kind of results you get, then stick with which ever you like better.

BTW some people might like the results better with one combination and other people might like the other combination better. So asking people which is better is pretty much pointless. I like this forum for "am I going to hurt or damage anything by doing this?" type questions. But for "which one is better?" type questions, the best approach is to try things and see what you like best.

In fact, you should try the Mike Erwin butt with its original shaft. You might find you like that even better for breaking than the OB shaft. If you do, then you could put a harder tip on it. You just never know until you try something.

Fatz

The shaft will only be as good as the butt you put it on. I once tried an ob break shaft on a crappy minnesota fats butt and it hit awful. Same shaft on a better quality butt hit better.

The taper on the OB break butt is the nuts and IMO is what gives the cue its power. Well worth the extra 100 vs buying the shaft alone.

The Butt of the Cue is down in the 2% range of making a difference.
If you are a great player and can feel tiny difference in equiptment, then the answer is yes. If not the answer is no.
The Tip (75%) Ferrule (5%) and first 6 inches of the shaft (another 5%) make up the vast majority of the cue's performance.
