Break shaft ood?

Is maple the best material for a break shaft? My jump cue shaft is made from purple heart and I was wondering how purple heart would work for a break shaft.

I am having my Dymonwood shaft re-tapered and will try it for a month and if it does not work for me I will go back to maple unless some one else has a better idea.

I often wonder why I even use a break cue. My phone app shows about 15 mph for my break speed, it used to be 17 mph.

Stop laughing guys, it seems to be the best I can do! It ain't the "golden years, it's the rusty years"!

Purpleheart would be fine as a break shaft.

FWIW, I have always believed the break should either be done with your playing cue, or a cue with similar weight & balance as your playing cue. The break is a critical shot in the game and should demand as much control as any other shot. It's difficult to get comfortable with a cue when you only use it once per game & in a powerful manner. The only real draw back to breaking with your player is that it is quite hard on the tip. Therefore, having a break cue isn't a bad idea, but I personally feel it's best if it's a cue that's very similar to your playing cue.

Thanks for reply!

Thanks for the reply. I agree on the importance of the break. I also think for many players it is not as important as it is for the better players, as quite often many of the average 9 Ball players get more then one turn at the table and are not "run out" players.

I have been working on my break with the wooden rack and the Magic Rack templet.

I almost prefer the Magic Rack, but feel it is important to do well with a wooden rack.

I think 100 years from now players will still be trying to figure out the break shot.
