break shot off the stack

I've seen blackjack do this in his you tube videos. Any real formula to help calculate this shot? Is this the same idea as in a carom shot explained in the 99 critical shots book? This could be a real life saver when not getting shape on a break ball to continue your run. Just curious on how to do it.

Its all about working the break ball off the outer edge of a ball in the stack, and having that break ball follow the tangent line from that contact point (on the ball in the stack) - through the center of the pocket.

It looks easy in the videos, but I miss these shots just as often as I make them. It depends upon a lot of factors, and controlling the speed of the shot is vital.

Here are a few diagrams of what I just explained - the yellow lines represent the tangent line - and the break ball needs to follow that path - to do that you must locate the correct contact point - easier said than done - but if you go back and watch the videos again, you will see that is all that I am doing.

I never go for these types of shots on purpose, but if they do come up, it is best to know how to do this.
