Good Morning! After watching players break, I was wondering has a cue ball ever shattered or cracked? What about a object ball? What would a ruling be in a tournement if a ball did break? Thanks.......Charlie D

I did it in tournament play once. I broke from the side playing 9 ball and as soon as the cue ball made contact with the 1, it smashed into pieces! I made the wing ball too!!

Anyway the rack was void, the table was cleaned, and we restarted the rack. I found out that day tha there is actually a wire or piece of metal in the core of the ball. They were super aramith BTW.
 
A friend of mine, John Q, is known for his hard breaks. Recently, in a bar tournament, he cracked and knocked a chip out of the cue ball. The chip left a perfect nickel-sized heart-shaped crater in old whitey, so naturally he asked me about selling it on ebay. I told him I didn't know if it would draw any interest or not, and he hasn't brought the subject up again.

Ooops, not what i thought.

i have a friend that has broken the head-pin twice that i know of. Once in bar, and it broke into about 8-10 pieces. one piece was found 30 or so feet away.

We had thought it might just be because of bar balls being old that it was a fluke till he did it again in a new poolroom with new balls.

Well, it's not "supposed" to happen but it CAN if the circumstances are just right. Any sort of crack or irregularity could affect the overall integrity of the ball and there are a few table manufacturers out there that can cause cracks in balls. I noticed with Kim Steels (sp?), the screws holding the pockets in place weren't recessed enough and would actually chip the balls over time. Anything can happen to them after that. I doubt you're ever going to see someone crack a cueball on a Brunswick or Diamond table.
 
I saw Randy Burris break playing nine ball on a bar box once and the 1 ball busted in half. It was funny b/c no one knew what the ruling was and the tourney director decided that it was a foul because the bigger half of the one ball fell on the floor. True story....Randy was a little upset.

If the table and the balls are dirty enough, you can crack a ball on any table. You'll crack the cueball with a g-10 tip. If the balls fall on a concrete floor, they will weaken over time and you'll be able to chip them on the break. But in a perfect world, they should never break.
 
Last Wednesday my buddy Money Matt knocked a chip out of a cueball while breaking. I saw him break and saw a chunk of something go flying, at first I thought his tip had came off but it took a big ole hunk out of the cueball. After snooping around for a while we found a sharp ass chunk of cueball in one of the side pockets
