breaking from the head string line or not

I have been experimenting with Chales Bond's techniques. I am currently breaking a from a few inches behind the head string using a rail bridge. I am doing this in order to reduce the length of my bridge for more control.

Am I losing power by sending the CB the extra distance, gaining momentum over the extra distance, or is it irrelevant & a matter of personal preference?

Whether or not you are losing power isn't anywhere near as important as whether you are accurate with your break shot. The difference in speed of the cue ball when it hits the rack is minimal when you move the cue ball back a few inches. You can more than make up for that loss by having an accurate shot that makes impact on the rack in such a way as to get the most efficient transfer of energy into the rack.
