Breaking With A Phenolic Tip..........

ok, maestros, had Chad Carter (Owensboro, KY) make me a break shaft with a phenolic ferrule/tip combo for my sneaky pete. been breaking with it, and i can tell a difference - this thing does splatter the balls better than what i have been using.

however, doesnt seem like i have much luck with it? any tips on using one of these phenolic breakers? what have you guys out there found that works?

I normally do the side rail break. I hit hard and one tip under center. Provided you get a good rack, you can put the wing ball in the corner and the 1 ball in the side at times.
 
Simple suggestions...

Stay within a 'quarter' of dead center. In other words, don't cue the cue ball outside of a quarter when it is put (mentally) on dead center of the cue ball.

I shortened up my stroke when breaking by 1-2" which helped, and I get down, line up the break (4 rough strokes), switch my eyes back to the cue ball (5 smooth strokes), and then break with my eyes on the cue ball, and try to follow through good. This has helped me, both in technique, and in using a phenolic tipped breaker (J&J break/jump cue).

I had a phenolic tip put on for $15. And in the past, just putting a new ferrule on (not phenolic) was $25, SO I would just guess about $35-40 for both. Now, considering, that I just bought a J&J Break/jump from Chrisonline for my brother for $60, shipping included, and a free set of JP's thrown in, I think I would go the extra $20, and get the whole cue that was built that way for breaking to begin with, not to mention the benefit of having the jump portion too. (and phenolic tips jump much better than leather).
 
I just picked up the spare shaft Chris had that has the 1 piece tip on it for $28, so now i have 2 shafts one of which will get a leather tip installed for possible tourney's and one with the tip/ferrule combo on it all for under $90

As for the phenolic tip's, I find if I break more controlled I tend to get great spreads, when I overpower the ball I tend to force balls to one side or another. Last week I broke the light above the table, I had my break grooved in and went all out, cueball jumped straight up and hit the light and stopped dead center table :) It does take a bit to get used to, but I love mine and everyone who has broken with it love the feel of the phenolic.

I have an Axiom j/b cue with a standard ferrule and a "le suck" tip I was just going to change over to make comparable to a J&J j/b cue.
 
Just to keep in mind that phenolic tip is not always the best choice. For some players that i've seen it's the worst; they just have the habit of breaking in the way that almost always when rack is not perfectly tight they got the cue ball flying around the hall.

Maybe I should just get a J&J shaft with a phenolic tip and ferrule, since the joint is the same on mine. Thanks.

All i'm saying is that you should try to test several different cues with different tips to find out the one that fits best for you. I'm using phenolic tip on my breaker and it works well for me.
