Breaking with a Predator Shaft

I have a cue that I want to use as my break cue but the shaft is a bit too thin and flimsy. I was wondering if I should buy a predator 314 for it and use it to break. Does anyone know if these shafts are good to break with?

I wouldn't. The ferrule wall is very thin and will wear down where it hits the table on the break shot. I know some people who break with them. I use to. That is the only thing I think they are good for.JMHO

What joint does it have?

I wouldn't do it, and I play with 314 shafts on my playing cue. They don't seem to transfer the energy to the CB as well on a break shot. Could be the tips tho, since I have never put a hard tip on the 314 shafts.

I would recommend a 13mm maple shaft, maybe a modified taper (I'm not comfortable with carom taper, YMMV) and either a hard waterbuffalo or phenolic tip. It will probably end up cheaper and break better than the 314.

I use a 314 on my shooting cue. I would never use a 314 on my break cue. The end of the 314 is hollow and the ferrule is very thin. You can break with it, but be prepared for the ferrule and the end of the shaft to crack.

Good luck!

I originally bought a P-314 for my Heubler, which was my shooting cue for a loooong time, because I wanted to try something different (yet keep cue somewhat the same). I liked it, but I didn't quite get the same hit/feel that I would get from the original shaft (while trying various tips too). One thing I did notice though, was that on my power stroke I seemed to be a tad bit more consistant with the 314.

I happened to be at the right place at the right time and stumbled upon a rare Skruggs and started shooting with it. After about 2-3 months, I demoted my Heubler to a break cue and kept the 314 as the "breaking" shaft.

At this point I started to experiment with a goal in mind. I'd go to the pool halls and find someone willing to spend an hour just racking balls for me. I'd toss 'em a $20, and the only thing I'd do for an hour was break racks (8 and 9 mostly) usually once or twice a week.

The 314 shaft is 10 years old now. The ferrel is starting to show some stress lines. I use a Le Pro tip, I'm on my third one, cause that's what I have the most of in my stash.

It works for me, your milage may vary.

I break with this: It hits the same as a Predator BK or Sledgehammer to me. I've had both and this one isn't any better, but it's no worse either. It has a 314 shaft.

I had a 314 on my jb butt once. Broke with it and hated it. I think you could do better with a 13+mm shaft with a short taper. On a side note, 314s are almost impossible to jump with.

isn't the BK just a regular predator shaft? or is something different about it???

the BK breaks a ton.......i'm not a big fan of predator but the BK is great. i always thought it was just a regular 314 shaft.......but i could be wrong.

The pin size for my cue is 3/8x10

The McDermott I.C.E.#1 shaft packs some real good break punch to it and you can get one in your joint size. However, you could also buy a break cue for about the same money or just a little more. I think I'd opt for buying a good break cue.
