Breaking with Revo

It's funny, when Sam Lambert was posting here and playing, everyone was saying the exact opposite... "learn the game, you dont need all these new things to get better, etc, etc"... now it's a completely different tune.

Spending money at an attempt to look like a pool player rather then be one...

Read your own post. We told Sam "you dont need all these new things to get better". We didn't say "you are forbidden from expensive equipment until your game improves".

There is a big difference between trying to 'buy your game' and buying equipment for the game you love. If a guy that can't run 3 balls wants to bang up a dennis searing on a valley table, more power to him. We all know it won't help him. The only problem with the above example is people like you end up sour that they have that equipment.

So you know the guy OP is talking about? You think he didnt buy the Revo because it was low deflection? You think he didnt buy the kamui chalk because it is supposed to stick better...

You think a skill level 3 bought those just because he wanted them, not because he thought they would make him better?

I wouldnt say I'm sour that he owns that equipment. A Revo is nowhere near my want list and I even mentioned that it would be more acceptable if he owned a nice high dollar custom cue. You even made the Searing analogy to further back up what I said there, you just didnt quote that part of my post.

Ok. I'd like to know which brand of car you drive. Which brand of watch you wear. What clothing you have in your wardrobe. The shoes you choose to wear. And what cues you use. Then I will make some blanket statements about your choices, as a consumer, without knowing one thing about you.

With the exception of cues, all the things you mentioned are not related to one little skill related niche "sport". They are just life in general. Sure some people own nicer things then others, but there is no skill level or ability pertaining to the watch I wear or the car I drive on the street. There is no skill skill level associated with just being a consumer.

So what would be fair is the analogy I mentioned, of the golfer, or a bowler or comparing the equipment that someone of a certain skill level owns in one sport to that of a similar sport.

Overall though, I guess I'm no better then the subject of the thread as I have some really nice cues and I suck at pool too.

If you put the same effort into your life, as you have in pursuit of your perfect cue, you'd be a doctor, or rocket scientist. Perhaps you should go get a good paying job first, get a car, and THEN go get a decent cue?

My wife wants a revo because she says it looks cool. When I asked her if she would use a graphite cue from Walmart she said no, that she liked the Predator brand. For no reason. She would be a 2 in APA, she can hardly form a bridge hand correctly let alone put a cue in it.

I use a nasty piece of lakewood with 30+ growth rings per inch by Diveney as a shaft paired up with one his cocbolo break butts. I got the joint switched out to vintage micarta because I like how it looks. I am maxed out in APA.

Can you give me advice on whether she is supposed to get a Revo? What about for me? Is my stuff too expensive or maybe not good enough for my skill level?

And most importantly, if she did get a Revo - How would that make you feel?

People shouldnt be judged on what they own or their reasons for buying it. Nor should they be judged on the effort they put into acquiring said items. If they have the money and they want it, let them buy it regardless of their skill level or intentions.

I don't necessarily want her to have a nice cue and I didn't say I am getting it for her. I said she wants one, and for particularly no reason except how it looks. If she really does want it in the end, she will purchase it like she does most all of her possessions. My point was maybe the guy in the original post has the same situation. Maybe not. The fact that you hold an opinion on whether he should have that equipment based on your assumptions of him buying his game or wanting to improve through equipment instead of practice.

If you don't see the difference between Sam Lambert "trying to go pro", JustinB's endless troll search for a cue, and this guy minding his own business bumping balls with a revo, you can't be helped.

I'd hate to have the OP on my team. When I joined the APA many years ago like 2003, I had a hunk of junk cue & decided to get a custom made. I was a s/l 3. Once I got the custom I fell in love with it & the idea of customs & bought many more like a Motley, Southwest, 2 Fanelli's & a Capone. Hurt my back real bad & sold everything a few years later thinking I'd never play again.

Come back to 2013 & my friends brother asked me to join his team in the UPA so I agreed. Bought a Dale Perry because I had nothing to shoot with & wasn't happy, so I decided to buy a used custom. Now I still shoot in the UPA 1x week, am only a s/l 5 now, but feel in love with cues & cases again & have about 20k in cues with a few more on order.

Guess the OP could have many threads about me & my choices.

If she does buy a cue with the revo shaft, I would bet a paycheck it goes unplayed for the first year. She does not really play pool at all. But because I am very much into billiards, she likes to purchase her own items to keep up.

My wife commandeers random cues of mine. Currently she took over an old Jacoby of mine. I'm no longer allowed to shoot with it as that's "her cue" even though she never uses it.

Oh the money I would have saved if I had bought the good stuff when I first started.
Like I mentioned earlier, if a S/L4 on one of my leagues hadn't brought in a Revo I may have never tried or bought one. I am glad he did. Between leagues and home, I'm averaging well over 20 hours a week and I truly enjoy mine.
I think I had to wipe it with a towel a couple of times.

I hope someone (regardless of skill) brings in a Digicue; I'm curious but I'd like to try one first.

Sure. I have a full time career. I own a house. Have 2 kids. I own a car. A motorcycle. And I don't need to sell my cues to pay my bills. Judge away, Judy.

Ive hit balls with a few. IMO it has the best feel out of all the laminated low def shafts out there. I assume that it would be because it is one piece rather then laminated, but I have no clue...

It's definitely neat and I wouldnt be surprised if other major companies start making similar shafts, it's just not for me. I prefer the shaft that the cue maker made for my cue and have been shooting with standard shafts for a very long time. I attempted to adjust to low def once a few years ago and I just couldnt adjust. It was a dark time in my life.

Where my issue is, with Justin, is that he's always in search of the magic cue. Yet he whines and complains about his station in life....how people treat him....and when he gets a cue, he sells it a week later. Then we go through the "lather, rinse, repeat" on a biweekly basis with the next "so what is your opinion on X cues" thread he posts. He doesn't own a car. I owned a car before I ever bought a $400-500 cue. When I didn't have a car, I owned a Dufferin cue. It played fine. I spend in proportion to my income. My car cannot exceed 10% of the value of my house. My cue cannot exceed 10% of the value of my car. Etc.. I am not blowing "the rent" on a new wooden stick.

He needs a life coach, not a pool cue. If you have to sell your cues on a weekly basis to make ends meet, you need to reevaluate your priorities.
