If you can find a inconspicuous area you can heat a needle and press it against it, if it smells like burning hair it is some type of bone or ivory. If it smells like plastic, well you know.

There is a cigarette burn on the other side, the material was unaltered by the burn which leads me to believe that it's bone or ivory as plastic would melt or boil

Not necesarily. I think it was called bakelite or something like that but there used to be a plastic that stood up rather well to heat. Like the previous poster put, taske a needle and heat it to red hot then touch it to an inconspicuous area where if it melts it, it wont be seen. then smel it as you touch it. Natural materials like bone and ivory witll give off a very distinctive smell like burning hair. Think of the smell you smell when the dentist is drilling your teeth. if it is plastic it will smell like plastic burning. it is one of the easiest ways to tell if someonthing is made out of bone or ivory.
