I have an opportunity to buy a used Brunswick Ventura HD 9 foot table for $500. I haven't seen it yet but it's claimed to be in good condition and about 20 years old. If so, do you think it's a good deal? Anything I should be wary of?

Decent furniture table. Some common things to look for are loose blinds and legs. Make sure the slate is not cracked and the screw holes are not stripped. Other than that a good buy.

I can help with this, I just refurbed a 9ft Ventura for sale. I got $2100 for it in 95% condition (just a few dings). The Ventura tables are quality furniture grade, 100% Mahogany. However they do have a problem with the way the frame is built. The major strength of the table is the outer frame, but it has a goofy 6"x4" solid beam going down the middle anyways. Well, this ties into the long frame rails via these little dinky 1x4 pieces which give no strength at all. The picture below shows the style of frame, without the long frame rails (water damage twisted them and would bowleg the legs).

With the long frame rails off, I decided to pin the short end side to the legs. I used some wood glue between mounts, all correct hardware, then drilled 1/2 hole to tap dowel in. No problems in the future now! Below are some pics, just make sure the feet are dead flat on the floor before you do this.

And finally, I made new cross supports out of solid mahogany. It is about 9" deep and one piece instead of the original 2 that fits in stock mounts but adds a lot of rigidity. couldn't find a pic installed. It fit perfectly and I can make them for you if you need. I hope I have been helpful.

Thanks for the input. Guess I'll go down and look at that table this weekend.
