Hi all,

I am ready to buy aa new pool cue for this season!

My budget is $300.

I like 18oz cues with Moori medium tip installed and 12.75mm tip size.

My suggestion to you is go to your local billiard store and see if they will let you test hit a few of the cues that you are intrested in. All three would be a good cue. You have to decide what feels good to you.

For a lot less than $300 you can order a Schmelke sneaky pete cue, with your choice of exotic woods, and so on. You can spend as little as $107 (factory direct) up to maybe $150 or so. I bought two of them, great hitting sticks, full splice no less!

I ordered the standard cocobolo sneaky pete with 13mm tip for $107 delivered from them.

Also ordered a specially made coco/birds eye maple sneaky with 12 mm tip for $127 delivered.

You may want to try and find a cue on here in your price range. You can probably find a used low end custom for around $300. I don't think many people would argue that this would be a better choice then the cues listed. I actually don't mind Mcdermotts or Joss's, but a custom cue will hold its value much better and will, more then likely, hit a little better. If you purchased a custom cue and didn't like it, you would be able to get most, if not all, of your money back. Meanwhile, you would probably lose about half of your investment on a production cue. Anyway you go is the right decision, as long as you like how the cue plays.

You can buy a sneaky pete $40 player's cue that hit's great. Lucassi's are low budget and hit good. I really like the way Meucci's hit (? spelling).
 
You can find a very nice sneaky on this forum easily. Right now, do a search for Darrin Hill. Matt from www.new2youqs.com has a bacote sneaky from Hill cues that will hit like a monster. He might let it go for $300. There's a Josey and a Barnhart sneaky for sale too. Both good choices IMHO.

That order from Schmelke is really a good idea. Hell, if you want a linen wrap they only charge $16 to add one. You can get an American made, full splice, cocobolo sneaky with a birdseye forend and a linen wrap for less than $150. You can specify a radial pin or a 3/8 X 10 too ! Live a little :p ...Tom

get a mezz

Granted there are cues that hit better for more money but if you can get a good deal on a nice mezz jump on it. They are a great playing cue and actually very popular in japan where there made.

Not familiar with Mezz cues.

Joss's have a 13.25mm conical shaft on them, and hit lit a steel rod. It is like shooting with break cue all the time. They lack feel.

I can never remember if it is McDermott or Viking that have the big butt, but one of them has a bigger butt that feels like a club in your grip hand.

A good Sneaky Pete will play as good as a $600-800 cue, and are a bargain for the money.

Other suggestion would be to call Bob Owen at Shurtz custom cues at
1-316-269-3844, he has entry custom cues, usually in inventory, for under
$300, or he could make one for you, choice of 4 different woods, Irish linen wrap, tip, etc.. for under $300, a good deal.
 
you cant go wrong with a McD, even if as snapshot 9 points out it has a old school fat butt. that life time guarentee is pretty sweet too. mcd makes a ton of cues in your price range. not to make things more complicated but as some have already suggested for that price you can get a custom cue (not just a sneaky). i suggest you try www.dominiakcues.com. william dominiak makes a great cue. it hits a ton and you can get a custom w1020 for $119-made to your liking. you just cant beat that.

I just purchased a cue from him with 30in., 12.75 mm shafts. The cue is 60 in. long. It does not hit like a steel rod either. You are spreading mis information about a Hall of Fame Cuemaker.
I think even you realize the "HIT" is determined by the tip, joint, ferrule and the taper. So you really can't use your blanket statement.
Now, for the postor; Get out there and play with the cue you are going to buy. Purchase what feels right to you.

My regular players are two Joss Cues . . . they do have a "stiff" hit, but they are an extremely good cue. I've also played with a lot of other people's Joss' and find they make very consistent, high quality cues at an affordable price. I'm proud to have my hands on 'em . . . like the Purdman said, get out there and hit everything you can before you plunk down the cash. Most everything mentioned, aside from the slam on Joss, is great advice. Rat, Fury, Mezz, etc . make very good cues . . . quite frankly, I don't know how some of 'em do it for the money they charge.

Also check the AZ sales forum . . . great cues do come up on it in your price range. Have fun and let us know what you end up with.

AMEN!!!!Dan and Crew make a fine cue!!he might even have a 1/100 or less for around $300 and you can get any size shaft from 12.5 to 13.25!!!!!!!!!!!!while I do agree on a used custom from someone on AZ you cant go wrong with a JOSS they dont all play the best but they all play GREAT!!!!!
 
What are you shooting with now? Are you dead set on getting a new butt and shaft? Reason I ask, if you are looking for something that might play a little better than what you have, you might consider just buying a different shaft for the butt. Just a suggestion.

I just sold Viking.

It was not bad but I want to try some other stuff as well as 12.75mm shaft.

13mm is ok but I feel more confortable shotting with 12.75 for longer shots..

Is that really a Made In America cue? Those sneaky petes are real nice looking, especially for the money.
