It is usually a roundish lump on the trunk of a tree. It is usually very unstable and needs to be cored to be used.
 
Burls occur when a tree gets a disease or a parasite that causes irregular growth. They can occur on any part of a tree, but most usable burls come from the trunk of a tree, as they are otherwise too small. I do a lot of woodturing and other woodworking with local mesquite burls, most of which are caused by a type of mistleltoe. Spalting, another desireable wood characteristic, is caused when dead wood is left in a moist environment and the wood begins to rot, specifically with the aid of certain types of mold. Too much spalting can seriously effect the integrity of the wood.
 
You can sell almost anything on e-bay as long as it is legal.
