Bustamonte's Stroke

Ok here goes... after watching several Bustamonte matches, I have noticed one thing in his stroke arm. It changes with each shot! On an easy shot it looks very sloppy to me but, on a critical shot he straightens up and hits it correctly! Is it just me or am I really on to somthing here?

Yes. Noticed the same. Bustamante's practice strokes are way off the intended target and very wavy, sometimes almost a full ball away (!!), but when the actual stroke takes place, he hits the cueball sweet and accurately. I think he is one of those players who don't really pay any attention to the cue direction on practice strokes, he just aims by feel. Works for him, I must say

The important thing is the final stroke hits exactly where intended. Don't put much into the aspect of breaking down strokes. It'll drive you nuts. Busta is a loose player which explains a lot. He wants motion and feel before the trigger is pulled. Heck he knows where to hit. Most Philippine players have near the same style. Good observation though.

The goal of every player should be to hit exactly where intended. All progress starts from there. Just develope a repeating precise stroke, that get's the cheese.

I've never much liked his stroke, way too much dipsy doodle for me. One thing is for sure though, it works big time... I also admire how loose his grip hand is.

yes that's true. most filipino players here in my country have what the americans call "swoopy stroke". if you have a chance to come to the philippines you will find out for yourself why a stroke like that was born and is very common among non-pro and pro players.

yeah, also noticed that most of the philipino players have an identical stroke. is it because they want to mislead their opponents as to what spin they used? been seeing a lot of other european players emulating this style of stroke too

Well, his actual final stroke must be straight, or else he wouldn't be able to pot many balls, now would he? That is not very obvious...you'd need a slow motion to verify that. I mean the guy looks like he's going to miscue every single time! Somehow he gets it right at the very last possible moment.

This shows that you cannot conclude anything by watching someone's stroke, unless we're talking extreme.

Umm, what's the benefit of misleading your opponent about the spin used ?

Don't see rather any European players emulating philipino stroke, did you have any particular player in mind ?

I work w/ a guy who says he has a relative over there that owns a convenience store w/ 4 tables out front. In the dirt...Outside...under a tarp. And that the tables stay busy until the sun goes down!!
