Buy new shaft vs. turning down current?

I have a Player's sneaky pete that I like....but in trying a team member's cue, I liked the narrower/smaller tip a lot.

My first thought was to try and pickup an LD shaft off the board but am having trouble finding an LD 5/16x18.

I don't care too much about looks...as long as it's straight. So it's fine if the new shaft doesn't match up exactly.

Would an option be to send in my current shaft to a cue-maker to have it turned down and a new tip ferrule/tip put on? Would I then need to add weight to the butt to compensate? Does the player's even have a weight bolt?

Am I just being silly thinking this way...and should just get an entirely new cue?

If turning down is an option - how much would that cost me?

Am I going to see a drastic difference between an modern LD shaft that fits my current butt vs. my current shaft being turned down (all else (tip) being equal)?

IMHO your best option is to buy a good used LD shaft and leave your original as original. Turning down your current shaft isn't going to make it Low Deflection (LD). If you have it turned down and don't like it, then you're up the proverbial creek, as it can't ever be made back to like it was.
If you buy a good condition LD shaft and don't like it, you can sell it for the same or about the same as you bought it for. Consider any loss your rental fee.
If you find you don't like or can't adjust to an LD shaft and still want your original turned down to a smaller tip, then you have that option with the previously expressed caveats
And finally, just because there are few 5/16-18 LD shafts in the "For Sale" forum right now, doesn't mean there aren't some available. Put out a "Looking to Buy" post and see what pops up.
